This is an excerpt of "THE STORY OF THE GYPSIES"
By Mrs. S. B. Titterington
It begins back - far, far back - amid the myths and traditions of the first century after Christ. To trace its true course through these misty, by-gone ages, is like searching for an old, almost obliterated path, in the tangles of a tropical forest. But, earnest, patient laborers have been at work, following the clues which peculiarities of language, race resemblance, fragments of old tradition, give in tracing back the course of the long Gypsy procession, winding down through the centuries, previous to the time when it first obtains definite historical record. An encampment of Gypsies always awakens a strange interest. There is
nothing attractive in their low, black tents, their squalor and filth, nor their universal reputation as thieves and rascals. But the mystery of ages hangs about them - a mystery just being explained - and their ancient pedigree surrounds them with an atmosphere of romance. A hundred different theories have been advanced regarding the origin of this strange, wandering people. Many of them are wild and improbable.
It is only within a few years that, through the unwearying research of a few scholars, who could not be dismayed or turned aside by the difficulties which hedged the way, the trail was struck amid the dense undergrowth of the legendary past, and followed back to what seems to be the beginning of the story of this extraordinary people.

A true gypsy is a Romani, descended from the JEws who followed Moses into the desert. There are other gygpsies, but they are not true gypsies. By definition, they are people who live in a vardo (their wagon) and live on the road, never truly settling anywhere for long. They are often a jack-of-all-trades and entertainers. They also barter for knowledge and other wears, offering services or similar in payment. Being a friend to a gypsy is also a good thing in superstition.

1. One of the best Broadway musicals of all times. It was based on the early life of the legendary burlesque queen/stripper, Gypsy Rose Lee.
2. A gypsy is also a dancer/singer who hasn't made it big on the professional stage yet and moves from show to show doing auditions and working in chorus lines, and hoping to someday become a star. 'A Chorus Line' is about such people. There is also a song from the musical, 'Applause!' called 'She's No Longer A Gypsy' which sums up the whole shebang.

well gypsies
are people who travel, and steal what is needed
and they can do this
because supposedly
when Jesus was on the cross, a gypsy came and stole one of the stakes and god/Jesus whatever basically made it okay for the gypsies to steal whatever they needed.

yeah.

People thought roaming bands were part of the lost tribes of Egypt of the Old Testament. Rather than "E-gypt-sees" they called them "Gypt-sees".
