As Scavok says, Google Earth (GE) typically uses photos up to several years old. Even so, the satellite imagery on GE would not be good enough to see much detail of your friend's house. The high resolution areas of GE (Typically around major centres) are taken from aerial photography, which has much higher resolution. GE does update and extend its high resolution areas regularly, but not everywhere at once, and when it does, the aerial photos are still a year or more old.
In most places, the local Land Information Service (It will go by different names, but it is the government agency responsible for recording land ownership) has a web site, which contains more up to date information and aerial photos, but it is still only as good as the last coverage (usually, at best a year old).
The land satellite networks are continually updating their coverage, and (at some expense), more recent satellite coverage is available, but again, the satellite resolution would not be good enough for your purposes.

None available. Contrary to public opinion, Google Earth is not live, and not all views from orbit. It is a combination of photos from space, airplanes, etc.

There is no current (civilian anyway) way to view your house live from space.
Google earth and mapquest satellite images are photos and are typically a few years old.

http://earth.google.com/
Or you can use the google maps page here:
http://maps.google.com/
(click "satellite" and type in your home town)
EDIT:
Sorry, I missed "live" in your question. No, google earth isn't live.
