No, it isn't bad to sleep on your back. Sleep Paralysis isn't necessarily a bad thing either.
Each person has a personal, preferred way to sleep. Most often, if the person tries to sleep in a different way, such as a new position, or different room, they may have trouble sleeping, or enter sleep paralysis.
Personally, I like sleeping on my left side, facing the right, against a wall. If I sleep in any other position, or on a couch, or in someone else's bed I have a higher chance of falling into sleep paralysis than if I am in my preferred position.
It could be that sleeping on your back is not the optimal position for you to get a good nights rest.

I absolutely cannot sleep on my back in the first place. It's automatic for me to sleep on my side.

What is sleep paralysis? I nearly always sleep on my back with my cat on my legs. I think it is good for my face because it isn't getting all wrinkled and distorted by laying on my tummy or sides. Your skin just lies straight--not being shoved or pushed into wrinkles and staying that way for hours. That is my theory and I am sticking to it!!!
