Gnawberry, sorry to disagree with you BUT: studies have shown that tears heal twice as fast as an episiotomy with less risk of scar tissue.
Some doctors will numb you before performing an episiotomy. Some don't. You should ask them.
They ALL should ask YOU what your desire is before you even go into labor. It's called "informed consent" and they are to give you the risks and benefits and let you make the decision.
I challenge you all to google episiotomy and see what mothers and studies show.
I also challenge you to google epidurals, risks and benefits. It is the #1 cause for c section. Not exactly our friend.
Thanks.

I have 3 children, and not once did I ever receive a shot to numb anything. They try to cut with a contraction so you will not feel it. They are not cutting your vagina open dear, they are cutting the skin near the back side so that it does not tear. A tear will not heal as nicely as a cut, and you could end up with scar tissue built up that can cause you some problems in the future. Also, not everyone has to have an episiotomy, some girls are lucky... they are more elastic, and the baby they have has a small head... I was not that lucky, grrr... With my first baby, the doctor was old school and gave me what they call a husband stitch... ( thanks doc) I guess that was to make it better for my husband after giving birth... who knows. The only problems I had after was a little tenderness and itching while it was healing... all three times... Don't fret over something so insignificant.. there are far more things to be concerned over.

Most midwives believe that episiotomies are only needed very rarely- if labor has been allowed to progress at a natural pace, your skin will have plenty of time to stretch- especially if your birth attendant is using a decent lubricant.
If you are given an episiotomy, it's usually done at the height of a contraction when the skin is stretched tight over the baby's head, so you may not even notice that it's happening.

Honeslty hon, I didnt feel a thing with mine, and my epidural had worn off hours before. I was cut from vagina to just a hair away from my bum hole, and was cut DEEP inside too, not just a surface cut. It was a really nasty one that took almost an hour to stitch back up. Dont worry, you are already in so much pain that you dont even feel the cut. The hard part comes when its all over. Standing up and sitting down REALLY hurts, like you are gonna tear in half. Thank god for pain meds.
Plus, you may not even need an episiotomy. Look up "perineal massage". It may sound gross, but it could save you from needing a ton of stiches.
PS: Even after being cut open like that, I healed almost completely in 3 weeks, and all shadows of pain were gone within a month. The body is an amazing thing. And yeah, everything went back to normal "down there". Just pray to god that you dont rip clear thru to your anus. Sometimes if they dont stitch you up well enough, poop can leak into your vagina and cause infections and stuff. Not fun. Best to just avoid needing an episiotomy in the first place. Start massaging! Make sure you look up the proper way to do it.
Good luck! Epidurals are your friend!

I would imagine you'd already have an epidural or medicine through an IV at that point. If you opt for natural birth, you might already be in plenty of pain from any tearing that may have already happened that the episiotomy wouldn't seem like a big deal. Thanks for posting the link to the video. My midwives don't do them, but it's certainly interesting to see how the process is done.

Well if youre having an epidural you cant feel it. and if you dont get one, they usually inject you with a numbing medication on the area.

yes they give you a shot down there first if they have time but if they have to do it during delivery you are so involved with the labor pains that you don't even feel it.
