Terrorist from Taiwan blew up the Summer Palace?
The leader of the terrorist had been photographed 10 years earlier shaking hands with the president of Taiwan after an independence conference. Taiwan states that they had no involvement.
Beijing then finds credible evidence that there was collusion between the terrorist leader and the current president of Taiwan.
China declares Taiwan to be a harborer of WMD's, a terrorist state and invades.

Gratval,
The reason Taiwan is no longer in the UN is because prior to the communist taking over, Taiwan was a province of China and China has laid claim to it sine Oct 1st 1949. If the UN accepts Taiwan into the UN then the world will be saying that they are a separate country and the world is not willing to do that.
China wants Taiwan back under the one country two government system, same as Hong Kong. I suspect, when China's economy and government improves that Taiwan and China will be reunited for economic reasons.

How funny...!!!! I do not understand why those who know nothing about Chinese history nor modern Chinese history can write their opinions here pretend that they know a lot!
China sees Taiwan as part of Fujian. It's not a past tense!
For the one who said Taiwanese and Chinese dislike each other for centuries... , showed how ignorant this person is!!! Taiwan was invaded by the Dutch in Ming Dynasty that's why you may found the word "Formosa" printed on old maps to name that island. In Qing Dynasty, the Chinese took back Taiwan from the Dutch. However, the Japanese invaded it in the late 19 century and ruled it till the end of WW2. Since then, US took it after WW2 for a while and in the end of Chinese civil war, Chiang Kai Shek (Jiang Jie Shi) brought his troops and escaped to Taiwan and blocked the communication between the mainland & Taiwan, there are relatives who missed since then for 50 years and some of them finally met in Hong Kong. There are many touching stories about looking for missing wives, husbands, brothers, sisters for the past decades. Notices / advertisements about looking for relatives are mostly put on newspapers in long years (daily, same contents looking for same persons but in vein) in Hong Kong because Hong Kong was the bridge between Taiwan and Mainland.
Never Taiwan ever has been formally accepted as a "country" in UN.
I have no idea of why you use the word "invade" and compare Taiwan and China against USA and Iraq. Why don't you ask your government whether they would invade Taiwan for that reason??? While some of US citizens like "I hate commies" always think China is enemy.
A question to you, California is a rich state and big enough too, if it wanted to declare independence, would the United States send troops to invade California? Well that's also your internal affair, right? Or .. it is an international one?
I'm a Chinese, I'm from Hong Kong, I view Taiwan as part of China.
Honestly...., how many people in Europe or Asia (except the USA citizens) respect USA about the Iraq war? So far..., I know no one in my area.
By the way, what were the reasons of invading Iraq? I hardly remember what's that? Was there any reasonable reason?

Chinese government doesn't act the same as USA government, terrorist shaking hands with Taiwanese president won't be an issue at all. Taiwanese President Chen did many things even worst than that and really stepped on Chinese government's tail but so far, not even 1 soldier was sent to Taiwan!
Weren't those terrorists trained by the US to against the USSR in Afghanistan long time ago? US should invade US?!

Sure I think it is fine and if Taiwan wins and keeps it's independence well good for them too. But I think it might be in Taiwan's best long term interest to just be a province of China as it use to be, since they aren't very successful on their own and any country that is weak in this stage of the game will be a natural haven for villians, outlaws, and terrorists. It would save the innocent folks in Taiwan from being lumped in with the terrorists asit ia in the Middle East.

It would be a good pretext for China to invade Taiwan, but I would be severely against it.
As for the comparison between the United States and China, it falls short.
The United States (though failed and foolish it might have been) took over Iraq and Afghanistan and tried to instill Democratic reform. It had no intention of permanently occupying those nations.
China on the other hand wants to make Taiwan part of its territory their by permanently robing those people of the self autonomy which they had before.
That I am very much against.

It just proves that communism is in full swing, and that China has just taken 3 steps back before it eventually takes 4 steps forward. Our criminal president claims to back taiwan, but he won't China is going to be allowed to annex Taiwan and keep the olympics. And we'll just talk and talk and talk because clinton gave them the long beach naval pier, our only deep water port on the west coast. It's getting really surreal.

George W. or the yet to materialize Democrat doppelganger
will bluster and move military assets into the Mariana Islands
but lack the economic ability to wage conventional warfare in
Pacific Ocean. That ability was frittered away in Iraq.

All of the Rich Kuo Min Tang who fled the mainland with thier gold are now trying to get back to the mainland so they can pick up where they left off. They and the Central Committee of the ""Communist"" Party are hand in hand exploiting the poor.
There is no need for China to occupy Taiwan.

Darn 'ai_leen_2003hk' you make a lot of sense. I was also thinking about all the stories from the Guatemalan Indigenous people I have heard about the war in their Country. Everybody lost some family member to the war (wife, husband, child, brother, you name it) and in such terrible conditions as torture and many different ways. So many innocent lives lost. Many of these people can't even see a (fiction) war movie because they relive their terrible experiences. No it doesn't make sense to make excuses to start a war. I am deeply hurt as I hear about all these individual innocent people affected by wars.

China and Taiwan have been disliking each other for centuries. Taiwan does not wish to be associated with China and seeks its independence from China's influence. China wants to control Taiwan for its economic ties to the West. Could I respect China after they invaded based on the storyline provided - no I could not and would not respect China for invading Taiwan for the reasons described. Such an invasion would warrant a 'military response' by the U.S. Government, thus drawing our country into an international conflict we could not ill afford to engage in nor strengthen our position in terms of international affairs.
