In Half Blood Prince, young voldemort asks prof slughorn about splitting his soul into 7 horcruxes. The horcruxes are as follows:
Harry, Ring, Book, Locket, Cup, Diadem, and Nagini.

So he only made 6 intentionally, with Harry being the 7th...so why did he want to know about 7 horcruxes if he only ended up really making 6?

Answer is bascially because he intended to get another one but everything went wrong when he went to the Potters and could not make any more. And the book is the diary.

The thing he asked Slughorn was what happens if you split your soul into 7, not actually making 7 horcruxes. He already knows how to make them and wanted to split his soul in 7. He just wanted to know what would happen if he do that. His intention was to make 6 horcrux, so the 7th bit of his soul would still reside in his physical body. He actually made 6 before killing the Potters. When his killing curse backfired the rebounding curse was so great bits of his soul found their way into Harry making him the 7th horcrux. So his plan of keeping with the magic number 7 crashed.

He wanted to know about splitting his soul into 7 parts: the 6 horcruxes and the bit that he intended to leave in his own body.

7 is the most powerful magical number so having ones soul in 7 parts would be the most powerful configuration it could hold in Voldemorts mind. 6 horcruxes would make a 7 part soul as the 7th part would be in Voldermort, making 7 seperate pieces.

I thought it the Horocruxes went as follows:

the Diary, Ring, Locket, Cup, Diadem, Nagini, Bone of his father

now didn't he use a horocrux to come in the 4th book? so that would make the bone of his father. that would be seven. Harry only had a part of soul becuz when Voldemort tried to kill him, he ended up blasting his soul. as it flew apart it got into (for the lack of a better term) into Harry.

So doesn't that mean that Harry became the 8th? wait now im confused....

He didn't want to know about making seven horcruxes, he wanted to know if spliting ones soul into seven pieces was preferable than just simply spliting it into two pieces. Seven is considered a powerful number, and Voldemort knew that when you make one Horcrux you split your soul into two pices. He knew that you'll always have one piece of your soul inside you whenever you make a horcrux, so his intention was to make six horcruxes, having his soul split into seven pieces. He never knew he broke that magic when he turned Nagini into a horcrux. Never knew he'd already split his soul into seven pieces on the night he tried killing Harry.

because of harrys magical bond in book 4 using the blood of the enimy to recreat himself made the 7th horcruxes and when harry dies but comes back the horcruxes is destroyed and the elder wand actual the own is harry it will not kill his owner so voldermort was finally destroyed.
