You shouldn't give her ANYTHING!!

She's not constipated.

It is NORMAL for breastfed babies to go more than a week without a BM. As long as when she does go it's soft, she's not constipated and doesn't need to be helped! Constipation refers to the consistency of his poop, NOT how often she goes. If her poop is hard, like pellets, then she is constipated.

My four month old will only go about once a week. When he does go it's a lot--practically an explosion. This is NORMAL!

Breastmilk is so perfect that sometimes babies use all of it, there's simply NO waste to expel. Please check out the link below about babies and constipation from La Leche League.

Breastmilk contains a natural laxative, that's why you're not supposed to give them juice or stimulants.

From the source:
"It is also normal for a breastfed baby older than six weeks to have only one bowel movement every few days. Some healthy babies will have only one bowel movement a week. When bowel movements are less frequent, they should be more profuse in volume. As long as the baby is gaining well, wetting sufficiently, and is happy and content there is no cause to be alarmed by infrequent bowel movements, and it is not necessary to give the baby a laxative, fruit juice, or any other "helpers." In fact, attempting to FORCE bowel movements can have HARMFUL consequences to your baby."

KUDOS TO MAEGS33[sp?] You got it mama!!! I've got 5 kids and each one pooped different from the other. My lo is bf and pooped once a week until he was 5 months, now he poops every other day. DON'T give your lil one extra water, as this thins the blood and can cause them to bleed to death if they get a cut. Babies get enough water in formula and breastmilk. It is possible that your lil one is having trouble pooping if it is indeed hard and like marbles. Grunting and even straining is normal. When in doubt ask the peditrician. Could be as simple as changing to soy formula, or changing your diet.

Good luck

Nothing! It is perfectly normal for a breastfed (or at least, mostly breastfed) baby at 3 months of age to go up to a week between poops. In fact, it is almost impossible for a breastfed baby to be constipated, without some other underlying medical condition.

When she does poop, what is it like? Is is soft or hard? That is how you know if she is constipated.

Call your pediatrician. Some babies poop 3 times a day and others poop once every 3 days! Mine went once every 3-4 days.

Don't give your baby prune juice until you know for sure shes constipated. Does she grunt and turn red as she strains to take a poop? If yes then my ped. told me to give my son 1 oz. prune juice diluted with 1 oz. water.

Pune Juice works best, if baby doesn't like it try pear juice or apple. Be careful though juice is acidy and needs to be diluted with some water. My mother gave us kids karo syrup (the clean one) when we did that. I never gave it to my son for that reason.... Call the doc or pharmacist, they would know... Some times even the OTC or home remedies don't work and a RX is needed. They also have infant enemas (I hope I spelled it right I'm tired sorry) which are available OTC and Rx

I had this same problem my son is now 4 months old apple juice or pear juice works if it's not baby juice then you need to do half water half juice. Or put some karo syrup(clear) in her bottle. Good luck to you. We had to change to soy formula.
* The Dr. told me don't give straight water this soon talk to your Dr. about the water part.

Formula has high iron, causing constipation,
so you can give her a mixture of dark Caro syrup and water. One teaspoon to 4 oz. of water. Its safe and sweet. After that you should put petroleum jelly on your pinkie finger and insert it into her rectum, this will help the dry poops come out without causing any bleeding. Gross, but its better than a trip to the ER with a bloody poopy diaper.

I have 3 kids and each one of them were constipated. You can try Prune Juice, Carrow Syrup (sp?) or you can go to wal mart and ask the pharmacist about baby laxatives. I had to use that for my daughter, it was the only thing that worked. Good luck, those little ones feel terrible when they cannot do the deed. I hope this helps.

After three days we can assume she is constipated. Baby-size suppository is best, or there's a folkloric remedy (but you can't do this too often for obvious reasons): dip your little finger in johnson's baby shampoo and perform a rectal exam - if there's any dirt in there it'll impel her to push it out.

nothing is the best thing that you can do... its normal for some babies to only poop once every 3 to 4 days, I'd say speak to your doctor though, hell listen to the babys tummy and will tell you what to do, as for now what I'd do is put your baby in a vibrating bouncy chair and let them do its thing.
