While you are replacing old parts you might need to replace the monitor? how old is your computer. The fact that it is a compaq is bad enough. I had monitor problems with my laptop. going black and fading back in and out. I got rid of it and got a gateway. What a world of difference. A year and a half later and never a problem. I got way more for less than i paid for the compaq.

Good luck

Any chance the connection is not secure? That is, the plug is not seated properly in the receptacle? It happens.

You can try a Windows repair. If this doesn't help, and the connection is secure, your monitor may be on the way out!

Did you check both ends of your monitor's power cord to see if it's loose?
(Your power supply has nothing to do with your monitor... they're not hooked together at all)!
