I'm 18. I play high stakes poker competitevely at various casinos downtown in my city thats home to 1 million people, so its a pretty big city.
There's no safety deposit boxes at these casinos, so I'm forced to carry cash, usually 800 bucks in hundreds when I'm going, and on a really big win, usually 2 000 coming home. I take public transit. I have enough money to get a car but don't have the time to learn how to drive or take the test cause I go to school full time and play poker full time.
Should I carry some type of weapon as protection?
I usually feel safe, and have always been liberal and for gun control, as I grew up in a different city with more gang violence and hated hearing about crime and gangs in my city. Recently on my way home, I saw several crackheads, prostitutes, and 2 guys beating up another guy. I no longer feel safe with all that money on my person.
If you would sugeest getting a weapon, what would you suggest?
Thanks in advance.

If you don't have time to get a drivers license you don't have time to take the required seminars to carry a concealed weapon.
Unless you plan on carrying it illegally, in which case I'd go with a Sig P229 elite Two Tone in a .357sig.

If you make a lot as a professional poker player and your town is as big as you tell us, is there any way to arranged to have a taxi or a limo to pick you up? After all, a big win like that could make fare affordable.
Is it possible to be comped by the casino to arrange transportation for you to get home?
I do not know the law in Nevada, however I do know casinos may frown upon you carrying heat cause the customers may get jumpy at the sight of it. The police may be called due to you creating a public disturbance. Plus casinos have a lot of security. Do not think it will stay concealed for long and go unnoticed by those in the camera room.
I never had the luck or skill in the past to win that big, so never have I been in that situation.
Consider other alternatives for protection. Perhaps have a crew you hang out with you to back you up in case things go wrong. Muggers rarely target large numbers. Avoid walking through the bad parts of town when going home. Mace or a stun gun (check for local laws and how the casinos feel about this.) If you win big, buy a car and learn how to drive it or have a friend you trust to come pick you up.
What ever you do, make sure you train and learn how to use your preferred method of protection and get proper training or classes.

I would talk to the casino cashier about having an account. You deposit your winnings with the cashier, they give you a check from the casino , you either have then write a check for your $800 and another for your winnings , or run the 800 in an account. As long as you have a credit limit of 0 you cant borrow to gamble.
Otherwise, if you win big , take a cab.
The casino may not want you there with a weapon, and it will take you a month or so on weekends to learn to carry, draw and shoot what you intend to shoot, and not yourself or a bystander.
ASk at your local police station about concealed carry. They can tell you the rules for your state and city.

Welcome to the Republican Party (just kidding).
The first step you need to take is learn about your local laws. Most firearms dealers can give you a real good idea of what to expect from the process of trying to obtain a CCW (concealed carry weapon) permit. Here in liberal California it is practically impossible to get one. The local sherriff gets to decide which reasons are good enough and which ones aren't. Unless you are a politician or the sherriff's brother, your life isn't worth protecting.
Then you need to choose a weapon. You plan to carry concealed, so it is a big advantage if it's small. It also needs to fit your hand well. It is critical that you learn to use your weapon and practice on a regular basis (at least every 6 months). If you aren't willing to kill someone... If your life is not worth more to you than that of a mugger... Do not buy a gun. You will end up being shot with it by someone else.
Two primary questions will be caliber and brand. For the most part brand will be mostly the result of what fits well in your hand. For small and effective, I think you should look at .380 semi-automatic pistols. Beretta makes a nice one. Also look at the Walther PPK.
If you are willing to carry something a little bigger, look at .40 caliber semi-automatics. Sig Sauer makes a really great one.
Get something with a black finish. Flashy guns aren't for concealment. Learn your weapon front to back. Know whether it will fire or not with the magazine removed. Be skilled with taking it off safety without looking at it.

I would definitely carry some sort of defense weapon. A gun would be my first choice. To get one, it depends on where you live. Here in Ohio you need to be 21 to get a CCW license. If you're old enough to get one where you live, I would definitely recommend that. If you're a good shot, you can go with a .22 caliber pistol (I recommend Ruger). If you're not so good at shooting you should get a .38 Super or a .45, something with some knock-down power. If you can't get a gun, try looking into a taser. But again, I know there are some state restrictions, so you have to check into that. If all else fails, you can always carry a good hunting knife around. Just go to Barnes and Noble, pick up a hunting magazine, and see which one suits you. Good luck and stay safe!

You only have the rights that your state allows. Otherwise, you are taking a chance by carrying a concealed weapon.
A safer bet is to hide the money (money belt, in your underwear, socks, etc) dress like a putz (an hourly worker for low pay), and carry twenty bucks in your wallet. If you get held up, you can say that you're a min wage guy that only has twenty bucks in his wallet. They'll take it and leave you alone.
That's a lot safer than getting in a shootout. I'd pay twenty bucks to avoid getting shot any day.

Open carry is legal in some states but is just begging for trouble. Concealed carry is pretty much verboten in every state if you don't have a permit. Check your local and state laws, but you'll probably have to get robbed, beaten, raped AND shot before the government gives you permission to defend your own life. Plus, even with a permit you'll probably get clipped by casino security, who would NOT take kindly to anyone but staff or law enforcement having a firearm on their property.
Also, 21 is the minimum age in Ca. Dunno if that is state or federal law. You may be S.O.L. completely for another 3 years.

I believe the states legal age to carry a concealed firearm is 21. Unless I am mistaken, you cannot carry legally for another 3 years. If you do, then you're giving gun control advocates more ammunition as to why we need stricter laws.

If you plan to keep playing poker and plan to carry that amount of money on you,I would recommend that you call a cab or get someone to escort you home. Car ring a weapon is very dangerous for yourself or someone else, since you have money on you, why? can,t you take a cab home. they are safe and fast. I hope you take the advise of someone who works full-time and plays full-time too.

You must contact your local NRA chapter. You must complete a series of screenings (extensive backround checks) and tests (most on safe gun handling) before you can have a licence to carry a concealed weapon. My neighbor has a licence to carry, he was thrilled about the day he got it.
Did you know that more than half of all gun related deaths happen with the owner's own gun?
