My friend has informed me of this today and I want to know more or see if this is even true!

No. There are some fundamental differences in the choice of network that companies choose to build. A phone optimized for one would need many more components to work on the other so that is uneconomical.

actually, that is partly correct. at this point, the 700 mhz spectrum is up for sale by the government. at this point, the FCC says that whoever the winning bidder is must keep the band for open access, which means in the future, any hardware capable of picking up this frequency will be able to use it. however, nothing is set in stone yet because the auction hasnt begun. read link below for more

there's a law that requires cellphone carriers to unlock the phones for free..

which means that if you buy a phone from cingular and you wanna use that phone to use a sim card from t-mobile, you can ask cingular to unlock the phone for you.

of course you can only do that if you're carrier is on a gsm network.

by the way, the unlocking of phones by carriers started sometime last yea, around november if i'm not mistaken.

no, that would ruin the capitalist part of this service. phones can be unlocked to be used on different services but companies usually lock them to theyre own service so that first off u have to buy their phone and then later you have to buy someone elses.
