A turbocharger is a turbine powered air compressor. Air gets hotter when you compress it. An intercooler is like a radiator for compressed, it helps pull some of the heat away. You don't hot air entering your engine because it'll have a lower oxygen density than cooler air (the less oxygen you have, the less fuel you can use, the less power you get). Intercoolers only work on forced induction engines (turbo or superchargers).
You can find cheap turbos from people parting out turbo cars, or people upgrading from smaller turbos.
If you want to make your car faster, educate yourself. There's a lot of things that can go wrong with a turbo install. Even if you choose to hire someone to do it for you, it helps if you can talk about exactly what you want. Also turbo cars have much higher maintenance requirements. If you don't treat your car right, it'll get expensive really quick.

Turbo add power by stuffing extra air into your engine. In effect, your engine is acting like a bigger engine.
In the process of compressing that extra air into the engine, the temperature of the charge (that the compressed air) becomes very HOT. So the intercooler is like a radiator for the hot air.
So the intercooler only works with turbo or superchargers.

Installing a turbo is not something that can be by a newbee. From the wording of your question, I would not just get a turbo kit or any other kit.
If you do not have too much experience with car mods, then it is best to find a speed shop and let the pros do the work.

Don't get me wrong. I am all for the do-it-yourselfer. But that's assuming you start out from doing small stuff first (mostly car maintenance, etc.)
Last summer I did my friend's clutch replacement (major surgery) and just yesterday I finished replacing the steering knuckle and drive shaft on my friend's ATV. And even with this kind of experience, I would NOT be doing turbo mods. Doing that wrong and you can totally destroy your engine.
Good Luck

Duh....
The intercooler cools the compressed air from the blazing hot turbo -- cooler air = denser air = better performance. Do not buy a 'cheap' turbo -- there is no such animal. Turbo systems are extremely complex and have to be designed for specfic car models, fuel systems and engine displacement. If not, tuning can be a nightmare. Do yourself a BIG favor, save up and buy a car that has a factory turbo installed. You will save thousands of dollars, hours and brain cells.

When you compress the air it gains heat. The hotter the air the less dense it is. Hot air expands, just like in a hot air ballon. The intercooler will reduce the heat and make the air more dense. That way you get more air into the cylinder and more power. Some intercoolers are air to air, and others are water to air.
Turbo's aren't cheap, and they can add a lot of maintenace problems too. good luck.

it cools the air after the turbo heats it up :) for every 10 degees of cooling you get 1 hp, so 300 degrees will get you 30 hp
Junkyards are a good source for turbos and intercoolers

Make , and year? Yes, turbo, or turbine needed. Does ice melts back into water? Itercooler, cools off. Adds torque, HP, RPM, and may save you some gas.Check ford, GM or any performance parts site.

A turbo intercooler cools a turbo. So I would guess you need a turbo in order to cool one.
