If by "taunting" you mean that he isn't afraid to come out while you are around, take a stick, spoon or something similar, tie a string to it, stand it upright and balance a pot on the end. (The handle and opposite will touch the ground and steady it.) Put something like cheese or peanut butter inside to entice the little rascal, and back away, holding the string. When he investigates, pull the string. The stick holding the pan up will come out, the pan will come to rest over the mouse and you will have him trapped. Slide a piece of cardboard under the pan, flip it over, and dispose of him as you see fit.
If you never see him, use the same basic principle, but instead of a string, just place the peanut butter on the stick that holds the pan up. With any luck, he will jar it loose when he goes after the peanut butter and trap himself.

Obviously some valid suggestions so far. I offer that in anything home made you'd likely have to monitor it pretty closely, and often at night.
I also find that GUMMY BEARS are a far more practical bait than Peanut Butter; and probably have a shelf life like that of Uranium; whereas Peanut butter will turn pretty quickly.
Anything store bought isn't strictly designed with SAVING in mind; and any bait causes you the risk of having carcasses decaying between the drywall.

Its hard to explain in words but I built one out of a wooden box with a clear perspex wall at one end and a diagonally hinged perspex door flap at the other end. I drilled small holes in the perspex so the cheesey smell could get out, and it worked by having the mouse push up the door flap to get in (coz its on an angle) as soon as the mouse was all the way in the door flap dropped down and locked it in there.

I bet you can rent an animal friendly trap. Then keep your eye open for one on the Internet and the local paper. Good for you not want to kill it.
