You need a router. The modem connects to one computer with one IP address and if you use a switch, the modem will see two IP addresses and have a spaz fit. The router mimicks being just one computer to the modem, but does the job of splitting out the internet to each computer connected to it.

I also have Qwest DSL high speed.

There might be a restriction because of the service plan you have through Qwest.
Depending on your package, I don't think you can run in a network. I have Qwest Choice DSL Deluxe.
If your plan only allows a single computer to access the internet, then a router will work.

Here is how I'm setup.
I have a switch with the uplink plugged into the Actiontec DLS modem. I have several computers plugged into the switch and they are all on the internet working great.

i would think that the problem would be that your internet provider does not assign multiple IPs... using a router would solve that problem as your router would then take over the responsibility of assigning the individual IPs..

if my suspicion is on the ball, disconnecting the 1st computer and completely resetting all the network connections should now allow your second computer to work.

Your gonna have to get a router, that's going to be the easiest way to share your web connection between the two PCs.

Yes you need a router. On the plus side they're not that expensive.
