Are these good cars? As some may know... I am a teenage guy looking for a car. Would a miata be a good choice, this is at the top of my list but the price tag can be really steep and what about the insurance would it be through the roof on a sports car like this?? Advice, thanks.

oh, the miata is a pleasure to drive. Not for those over 6 feet though. It is the last cheap, pure sports car. I have an integra and miata. the miata is just a pleasure to drive, it is so fun. The only people who think they are chick cars are guys with small.... who need to compensate and don't know the meaning of track time.

I have to say Miata, just from the point of view of how new of a car you can get for the same price. Add to that the fact that a Miata is cheaper to maintain and insure then either the Mustang or Nissan. Another selling point for me is the fun of driving a Miata. I have not owned a Mustang for years, and I have never owned a 300zx, but I do own Miata's. There are currently two in my stable. One I modify and the other one stock. They have proven to be the cheapest car that I have ever owned to maintain. They are also the most fun. As for safety, few cars are as apt at accident avoidance as the Miata. I want to stay out of crashes. This is the best safety feature to look for as far as I am concerned. Many fault the Miata for its looks, calling it a girlie car. Well, I prefer the uncluttered lines of a Miata. Maybe it does look a bit feminine, but so does the AC Cobra. In the hands of a good to great driver, who cares how it looks or what others think. I am of the opinion that those that want the car to make a statement about their sexuality are a bit insecure anyway and should stay off the roads.

Don't know WHY you're saying "Ha Ha" about the Miata, unless you're of the mindset that the Miata is a girl's car...IMO it's a pure sportscar suitable for either male or female.

Miata is an EXCELLENT car, always has been! Car & Driver and Motor Trend and MANY other sources have given the Miata high ratings for reliability and for being a PURE sports car for MANY years now.

It's not a particularly fast car, the new models are only 177 HP, but probably fast enough considering it's a lightweight car.

Insurance will be your enemy here, as a teenager.. Are you paying for the car and insurance or your parents.

If it's your parents....I'd still question their judgement in getting a teen a sportscar though.

I'd get a Madza 3 or better yet, the Madza 6 instead.

Dude, Miatas rock. Yes a brand new one would be right through the roof on insurance. However, you can find used Miatas with low miles from 90-97 with the old body style and a slightly smaller engine. However don't let the smaller engine or older style put you off. The older Miatas handle better, use less gas, and will be way cheaper on insurance. My 91 gets 36 in town and 39-40 on the Highway.

So start checking on Yahoo's version of AutoTrader.com, which is far better maintained. Get CarFax to check out the vehicles before you take them to a trusted mechanic. I even bet your dad would be pleased as the older Miatas are straight from the 60's boxters convertibles. They are tons of fun and after your first Miata you will be hooked.

Dude, you can get a 90-97 for a dang good price that runs smooth and it'll get you from point a-b. They are reliable and VERY fun. The down sides is you can only fit one chick in there at a time, and all of those big lifted trucks on the road today don't tend to see such a little car and always try to get in my lane while I'm there! I installed a police siren that i blare when this happens, and that seems to get peoples attention and has saved me a lot. There's a lot you can do to it later down the road as well. Just don't go the whole monster miata bit. That V8 weighs down the car and its no longer a roadster its a dragster. Go for the S2000 motor and tranny swap you'll stay light and nimble and you''ll be 900lbs lighter then the S2000. You'll be quick enough with that.

if you can afford the insurance, then yeah, go for it. its got a moderate powerplant so you probably wont get into to muc trouble as long as its stock, but once you start modding it you can guarantee you'll start collecting tickets. they handle beautifully, and if you like the feel of a car that can corner over a car that pins you back in the seat, then the miata is your best bet. its cheap, there are alot of them around, and its easy to find parking spaces. only issue you might confront, is your friends will think its a girly car (its not) and you might get mocked cuz of it. just drop a V8 into it and you should have the best of both worlds (12 s quarter mile with a stock 302 ford v8 in a miata). most importantly, do more research and choose whats right for you. i personally would endorse the miata.

Miatas are very good cars and if I was shorter, I'd own one as a second car. However, at your age, the insurance would be through the roof- as with any sportscar. If you want one, buy an older one. They aren't very costly and should last for years to come- if they were properly maintained. Also, the insurance will be significantly cheaper on older ones.

I've actually owned 4 miatas.2first gen. and 2 second gen.I've run up about 400,000 miles on these cars.Overall I'd have to say terrific cars. The first gen.1990-1997 did have some issues. Stay away from the 1990 models, they had weak keyways that led to premature crank failures. The first gen. models also had issues with the fit and finish and quality of some components.Second gen. models1999-2005 were a great leap forward. The refinement and overall quality were greatly improved. The only downside is the rather course and underpowered engines.I had a 2001 model, and basically tortured it for 125,000 miles and it never left me stranded.Never burned oil and had original clutch.I recently purchased a bmw 325ci,but I have to say I prefer and miss the miata. If your looking to purchase one I'd say go for the newer generation, but you won't go wrong with ether....Good luck!

I second the No on this one. Miatas are expensive for what you're getting - you've got two seats and a tiny trunk, which pretty much destroy any dream of it being a practical car - and insurance will be horrible. Mind you, insurance rates for you are going to be horrible REGARDLESS of what you drive. Don't make this worse by buying a two-door sports car unless you're confident that your parents have more money than they know what to do with and would love nothing more than to spend it on you for the next 6 years or so (assuming they help you out through college :) )

Not to mention - and this might be important to a young guy like yourself - I've never known a Miata to be considered anything less than a full-blown chick car :) The only remotely cool ones are the brand new ones, and even those are iffy. Definitely fun to drive and fairly reliable, small and easy to park, too, but totally impractical and potentially dangerous for a first time driver.

Keep searching :)

I have thought about getting a 90-93 as a daily driver...something a little ratty, that i dont mind getting dings and dents on, there are lots out there
i highly recommend the mx5

By the way....they are girls cars.....which means girls LOVE to ride around in them, which suits me fine.
