I currently have both. A kohler 18 horse twin with full pressure oil system. I also have a 17.5 horse BS single cylinder. They are both excelent engines. I have in the past taken both brands apart for repairs and I will tell you that there isn't much difference in how they are made. That goes for Tecumseh also. I gues my bottom line on this is it doesn't matter much to me. They are all good. Everyone will have an opinion and a story to tell you about why which one is best and which is worst. Truth is they are all good if taken care of. On the smaller engines like 5--6 hp I like the Tecumseh carburators better than BS. But again they both work good.

Briggs and Stratton has been the small engine industry leader for a long time, but I am very disappointed in their aluminum head engines that have come out in the last 10-12 years. I am not familiar with Kohler engines under 10hp but I do believe that Honda is a serious contender in the market, also.

Lawnboy used to, when they made their own 2 cycle engines, but now they just run the same crap everyone else does. A Lawnboy Dura Force 2 cycle will outperform any similar size Briggs, or Kohler engine. My Lawnboy goes through wet, thick grass that stalls out my Briggs that is rated at 2 more hp.

briggs & stratton. They have more experience in the business, and they (for the most part) will stand behind their product!

briggs and stratton ..because thier parts are more available in stores...besides that they are more standardized...meaning you can easliy exchange parts from other engines
