Briggs and Stratton makes more race engines than anyone in the world or so they claim.

But, I have worked on a lot of engines. Most are good if a person take care of them and change the oil. I have had Briggs most. Had a Landscaping Business and mowing yards was part of it. My first mower was a Sears Rider with a 15 HP Briggs. We figured the hours we were putting on our mowers and it was about 10 years of use in one season. The Sears rider was used for 3 years, so had the use of 30 years compared to a normal life. A push rod broke because we never adjusted according to regular maintenance. When we gave it away it was still going strong and had good compression. We changed oil once a week due to the number of hours.
But, really, I am more concerned with the Mower Frame and Deck. I like the nice solid Steel front axle too, not the flimsy looking crap, though it OK. Twin cylinders are nice too, run more smooth than a single cylinder.

Briggs & Stratton is good, but the best I have seen is Honda.
Mine is 15 years old. I have yet to do more than an oil change and I live where we mow 11 months out of the year.

I have a lawnmower with a 5 HP Briggs & Stratton. Never had any problems with it, runs great and is relatively quiet compared to other lawnmowers. It starts easily even on the the lowest setting.

the Briggs ,between those two, those engines will take a lot and keep on running, our push mower is around 25 years old,and still runs like new, that's proof enough for me,my rider also has the Briggs on it 15 years old and going good, nothing but Briggs for me,good luck.

HONDA™ is far superior. Wouldn't even consider buying anything else.

Kawasaki for gas and Kubota for diesel.

I would rather have a diesel. If I can't, Kawasaki.
