I have a question which I hope can be answered accurately. I am not entirely superstitious, but I do have beliefs. A few days ago, my family (Father, Mother, and sibling) went out to dinner. On our way driving home, we spotted a WHITE OWL in the field to the right of our car. Right when we went passed the owl, it suddenly flew in front of our car, about 4 inches from the window. Note that this is in broad sunlight, during the day, approximately 5 30 - 6 PM, I thought owls were nocturnal. I found this very odd...Anyways, today is my Mother's birthday and my Grandfather (her Father) died this morning (he has been fighting long time illness). I am not worried about my Grandfather, I have a feeling he made it to the otherside, if not I pray he will, but I have little doubt that he hasn't crossed. Bascially, I want to know if any experienced supersitioners or spirtuals know if owls really did bring the bad luck of his death on her birthday, and if the owl did in fact warn of his death.

Ms. Suewillie, thank you for your response especially because of your positive view on the owl. I know owls are known to bring bad luck in certain superstitious ways, but I don't forget that they are animals, here on earth, for a reason, and are beautiful creatures. It is always great to look at the positive side of things. In my life, I am not worried about bad luck, I believe free will allows me to think and act and live the way I want (happily). I believe that white owls can symbolize purity, and perhaps it was an angel letting us know, thank you very much. And thank you all for your great responses, I appreciate it.

In ancient Rome, the hooting of an owl warned of immanent death. In mythology, owls are regarded as birds of occult (hidden) wisdom and are privy to all sorts of knowledge. Owls can appear in daytime, especially if they're disturbed. The owl you saw (a Snowy?) was probably making an early sweep across the field after rodents. It was probably more hungry than in the know about your Grandfather. You can take the owl sighting as a coincidence or, if you are spiritual, as a message. It is up to you and what you're comfortable with. Either way, the owl didn't mean any harm.

There are a lot of superstitions associated with owls. Here are a few of them:
-- If an owl lands on the roof of your house, it is an omen of death. Constant hooting near your house also foretells death.
-- If an owl hoots at the moment of childbirth, the child will have an unhappy life.
-- The Irish believe that if an owl flies into a house it must be killed immediately. If it escapes, it will take the luck of the house with it.
-- If an owl nests in an abandoned house, then the dwelling must be haunted. An owl is the only creature who can abide a ghost.
-- By eating salted owl, a person can be cured of gout.
-- If an owl hoots during a burial service, the deceased is bound to rise from the grave and haunt the living.
-- An owl living in the attic of a house will cause a pregnant woman to miscarry.
-- If a pregnant woman hears the shriek of an owl, her child will be a girl.

an owl is a bird, doing what birds do; looking for a mate, food or a nest, is not a harbinger of misfortune. it is nothing to worry about but it is fun to specutate. read more on owls on the link below.

yes he made it to the other side. the facts cant be ignored and i don't believe in coincidences so, it was a white owl & that represents purity so i believe it was an angel in the form of a owl letting you know that it was his time and he went straight to heaven. you said you he had been sick a long time & if that had been me I would have known grandpa was going to die within a day or two. It was nothing bad ...it was all good!

i dont know. there is a story that says god got mad at the owl during the creation of the earth, so he made it ugly, turned its head around, and banished it to only the night. no. i think it was just ackward timing. you are working yourself up over an owl that was stupid enough to get hit by a car. sorry about your loss.
