Make sure you use hot water and bleach, also, let them soak a few minutes. If it is one item, my mother in law boils hers in a big pot!!! Also, there is a product called yellow-out that works if there are impurities in your water.

Treat any stains before hand with a stain remover such as Shout, allow to sit for about 10 minutes and then fill the washer. Add your regular detergent (I suggest one with no color) and then add the amount of bleach needed for the size of your load. Try to keep newer whites in loads of their own, so that the dirtier, more soiled ones dont make them dingy as well. Always use hot water when washing whites, and always remember to put the machine on gentle cycle if the items you are washing are of better quality! Hope this Helps!

1 cup clorox bleach and 1/2 cup baking soda in warm or hot water (with the clothes in washing machine) , let soak for hour and wash, do it twice! also there is this stuff that is a blueing agent you can put a cap full of that in too, read directions though, but the blueing makes the whites whiter. probably get it at walmart or a big chain supr market.

The other suggestions are great. Just want to add that drying your whites on a line in the sun will make them whiter than using a dryer. (Not that I do that, but it does whiten them.) And while its almost never used anymore, my grandmother always added bluing (a pale blue tinting agent) in the last rinse of her whites to make them whiter.
