Neither Macy's, Boscov's and certain gas stations accept ATM debit cards as payment in MD. Otherwise, ATM debit cards are pretty much accepted anywhere else.

Yes, most do.

Even if a store does not directly accept debit as a form of payment, they will just run your Debit card as a Credit card, which does basically the same thing.

Yes. But it varies by county on how to use your card.

Signature Transaction, you sign for your purchase.
Pin transactions, you enter your pin.

U.S. debit card with a MasterCard or Visa Symbol can work as a pin or as as signature transaction.

Some banks and some merchants charge a pin transaction fee..

First, in most cases, they do not have to put in their PIN number. If they press the "debit" button, have them enter the PIN and do not have them sign anything. If they press the credit button, or they have you do it yourself, then have them sign the first copy and return it to you, but do not have them enter the PIN number. Second, you should not be trying to run one of those machines based on what you read on this website. You should have someone who is familiar with the machine in your restaurant train you to use it properly.

Yes...if you don't know your pin, sometimes you can run it through as "credit". It still comes out of your checking account.
