I have been using Norton's but it has not been very user friendly and also is expensive.

What I will recommend to you are the best.
Whether or not you can afford them only you can answer.
However if you get these and configure them properly, you will never have a virus or spyware problem.
Anti-Virus: Kaspersky - $50
Spyware: SpySweeper - $30
or
CounterSpy - $20

Try one of the following free anti virus softwares:
1. AVG from www.grisoft.com
2. Avira Antivir PE Classic from www.free-av.com
You may need download manager like FlashGet to help you download. Get it from www.flashget.com
