Research throws up all kinds of snippets, some of which make you whince. After the comparative failure of Bellini's Zaira in Parma, 1829, this pamflet was found blowing in the wind in the city:

"In case anyone finds Bellini's musical talent, he is begged to take it to the office of the impresario Bandini. We shall be very grateful indeed."

Which work by which one of the masters could compel you to have a similar notice printed and distributed?

What a question. Those (like me) who dare to answer risk outrage from many, and/or becoming the object of a tar and feather party.

There are three among which I cannot decide.. The first is Shostakovich's 15th symphony. I got the impression that the man had finally gone senile. The little paraphrase of the William Tell Overture was just too much. (His 7th symphony is a close second, but I am not that daring)

The second -- well, let me tell this story. It was drive time, and I was listening to "Performance Today". I caught the middle of a piece, and it was a series of pointless orchestral gestures, repetitive scale patterns, unimaginative piano figures, all very well orchestrated, but musically pointless. I said to myself, "What is this dreadful dog's breakfast of a piece?" and waited impatiently for it to end so that the announcer could tell me what the object of my suffering was. The culprit was Tschaikovsky, and the crime was the 2nd Piano Concerto.

My third pick is Beethoven's "Wellington's Victory", which he obviously phoned in.

Sorry to answer beyod the question's requirements, but I truly could not decide.

Given the fact that it was the March, 16 dedication premiere of newly built Teatro Regio and that the spirit of people there is always contra aliquem, that notice could have been printed and distributed only there. Where by the way I was born.
