A lecture from whichever veteran or older gentleman happens to be around.
The gov't has no place punishing people for flag burning as has clearly been determined to be an exercise of your free speech right.
Yes, it is horrible and I would never do it, but it is also only a symbol. They are making their stand for something they believe in and that is not a bad thing.

If you own the flag you burn and don't violate any fire safety codes then no punishment. Burn a flag that was public property and you be made to serve a year in the military doing whatever you are physically capable of that they can trust you not to sabotage. Burn my flag and you will be begging for police protection, protection from me...

Well i dunno, but it sure will effect a bunch of boy scouts that burn them when people wish to retire old worn flags.
So letting them lie in the landfill with the rest of the trash, is more preferable?
I don't think there should be a punishment for burning anything made in China. I think allowing them to be made in China should be an offense though.

What is the punishment for disregarding The Constitution? There should be no punishment. This is still a semi-free country.

Stephanie:
It's amazing to me that you say people have the right to burn the flag "no matter who it offends". I'm sure your one of the ones not wanting the pledge in schools, or smoking in public, or people using racial slurs. According to you it's their right though right? No matter who it offends?
Get off your high horse. Say what you mean. "no matter who it offends as long as it doesn't offend me!"
Now to the question.
If the flag is being burned for the proper reason, then I have no problem with it. If it's being burned in protest, then it should be a federal offense and autimatic jail time. IMHO

Well I do think they need a wake-up call but no drastic punishment. A 2 month vacation in Cuba might be a good wake-up for them.

Why should it be a punishable offense? This is still America last time I checked and people do have the right to do that no matter who it offends.

Punishment? I wouldn't burn one, but to see someone else burn one has no affect on my own belief in the Constitution. Why don't you focus on Bush's crimes, instead of this symbolic nonsense. Patriots question their government!

Nothing - the scorn of good Americans is enough.
And this is a non-issue.
