I also think that it is true in the sense that If I take care of myself... if I provide my life with things that make ME happy.. then I have happiness to share with others. If I am not mindful of my own state of happiness, I have no happiness to share with others.

I agree with that quote because I'm an objectivist. Objectivism is the Ayn Rand founded philosophy of self-glorification and a celebration of someone's own personality and personal beauty. I don't find this quote to be so selfish, simply a survival of the fittest kind of thing. Except in nature there are families and we don't always have these here. Anyway, I think it's a valid philosophy and I think it's only natural to care more about yourself.

I feel like its always good to care about everyone else feelings but make sure that you are happy with it too. I agree with it to a point. My last boyfriend meant the world to me but no one in my family liked him. I didn't care then and I don't understand it now because he made me happy. Its good that he lives on the other side of the country from me so I don't 'bump' into him.

I disagree strongly with this quote, because I honestly believe that serving others and working to make someone else happy will mean achieving my own happiness rather than sacrificing it.

I sort of agree.
But it is a morally nihilistic clause. The idea of duty or ethics is completely foreign to that quote.
I would have to add much more to it before I agreed:
"I am first and foremost responsible for my own happiness before that of others. But I am also bound to act in an ethical fashion"

You probably won't always feel that way. There may come a time when making someone happy becomes extremely important to you. Pax - C

The Will is positive, the Judgment is negative. A life with out the Judgment would be hopeless because there would be no sense for the impossible, no way to know impossible, leprosy; no sense, no reason for hope.
'I do my thing and you do your thing.
I am not in this world to live up to your expectations,
And you are not in this world to live up to mine.
You are you, and I am I, and if by chance we find each other, it's beautiful.
If not, it can't be helped.
(Fritz Perls, 1969)'

i totally agree with that quote because first and foremost selfish or not, it all about you, you as a person come first when it comes to happiness you should be to think about what makes you happy or satisfied, if your not happy then your miserable and how wants to be miserable.... duh no one... so if something doesn't make another person happy or please "F" them cause if i feel like eating ice cream with a little silver spoon and cotton shorts and tube soaks singing "Pull Over" by Trina and look like an idiot, i don't care I'm HAPPY

agree. you have to take care of yourself first in order to help others.
just make sure you're not hurting others in your decision to put your happiness above all others.
