The moon runs in a cycle that lasts between 28-29 days consisting of the new moon where the reflection of the sun on the moon is blocked by the earth , then there is the first quarter, the full moon in which the moon is between the sun and the earth and the last quarter before repeating the cycle with the new moon 28-29 days later. It os almost considered but not quite a monthly period of time.

Moon = month
Summer = young mans year
Winter = old mans years
Daytime
Night time
sleep time
simple.
that 'many moons ago' is actually a bad translation. Now days we use it as a punchline. Even "I'm" guilty of this LOL
My elders say "long winters ago"
