Because the Republican legislators, in both state and federal legislatures, consistently fought the voting rights act and would not do any thing about legislated discrimination, which was law at the time. If they would not have dropped the ball on this, they would have had a majority in congress for another 25 years after the late 50's.

Abraham Lincoln was Republican, yes, but that doesn't mean that the Republican party itself is responsible for freeing the slaves. Lincoln actually went against not only the Democratic party of the time, but most of society at that time, including the Republican party. Lincoln was elected on the position of maintaining the status quo. He did not want to abolish slavery, so as not to anger the southern states. Not to diminish Lincoln's humanitarianism, since he was a great man, but he only wrote the Emancipation Proclamation to get the support of the blacks in the south. For instance, some of the border states that were still a part of the Union were some of the slave states. The Emancipation Proclamation stated that all slaves in the states that had seceded from the Union were free, not the ones in the states that didn't secede.
Say I am in a group called the donut's, and one of the members of my group is responsible for somehow bringing an end to racism. That doesn't mean that the whole group, donut's, is responsible for ending racism.
It is not fair to label one political party as racist, or anything else, since not everyone in that party are like minded. Some people may harbor those kind of feelings, but it is not true to say that all in a group harbor those feelings.

First of all, there is no party that made blacks "free". If you are talking slavery, that was institutional and subjective, therefore, only the physical part was not free.
Obama or anyone should win if they are the best candidate. Part of the problem with politics is just that, people can't get over someones appearance and look at intelligence, qualifications and who would best lead our country.

Is Abe really the same type of republican that is in power today? I don't think so. The fact is that a lot of blacks come from poor areas of the country. Most dems do believe in programs that will give the poor an opportunity to get out of poverty. I believe that poor people want an opportunity not a handout. I find it hard to believe that black men and women vote on a person because of their race, I think people vote on issues not race.

Here's the kicker, Repubs set them free but Abe was going to deport the slaves to Central America after the war.

Interesting that you seem to believe that the Republican party today bears any resemblance whatsoever to the party of Lincoln. Nothing could be further from the truth...

Thing is that the people who were Republicans then would be Democrats today, and Democrats today would be Republicans today. And while the Republicans freed them, it took the efforts of many northern Democrats to bring about civil rights, while all the racists in the south ran straight into the arms of the Republicans when that happened.

Please pardon my French, but Hell, I've given up on understanding blacks when they vote. Obama is a good choice, but I will wait until it comes down to the wire as to which Democrat for whom I will vote.

Because as long as they are a democrat voting block, they aren't making waves for themselves with the party that legislates against their interests.
I like your thinking, though, that would be fun to watch. . . disastrous for the country, but it would be fun to watch.
