It's not that I am trying to keep up with the Joneses, but when you have children who see that crap advertised on TV, and that their friends have that crap, it's hard to say no though you have to.
People do measure success with money, I don't care what anyone answered on here. It's true that when the Joneses have a new mercedes or are going on vacation again, people do envy them, and probably subconsciously respect them more for being 'accomplished'.

Never cared about what the Jones do. My measure of success is based on am I happy where I am? If the answer is yes, great. If not I move on to whatever is next. So at the moment I am very successful.

Success for me was having a heathy happy family and being able to retire at a relative young age. I don't have a fortune but I have all the above plus I am loved so I feel rich. Don't need a lot of stuff to show off.

The rats are winning, I measure success by if I am doing OK, I have more than I ever wanted and now want to get rid of most of it. it's all just crap that some clever marketing guru convinced us we needed and it made us happy for second then the novelty wore off and we needed the next cool thing. I gave that up years ago when I gave up TV. I don't want it back. I want freedom.

I generally measure success in how happy I am in my life and career.I have a job I love and wouldn't trade for the world. I am not materialistic so "keeping up with the Jones" always seemed really silly and childish to me. What do I care what someone else thinks of my car? I am happy with what I have.

Once I've succeeded in my personal goals I raise the standard a little more higher and more difficult. This helps me stay on top of things personally.

My measure of success:
That my family is happy and healthy, I have a roof over my head, food on my table, my bills are paid, I have money squirreled away, and I can afford some impulse purchases now and then.

No, I've never lived my life that way. I'm very happy with what I have and live a decent life. The only thing that I'd like to do is to be able to retire a bit early to stay at home with the animals. No neighbors (so nobody to keep up with..lol), live in the country. Love it! :)
