sitting in government class back in the days of highschool, i remember hearing the history of this great country, now i watch the news and hear the president denying a bill that will promote tolerance for homosexuals, or order more troops to die for oil, pass a tax making the rich richer and the poor poorer, can we ever be that country that everyone wanted to live in, or countries turned to for protection rather than burn its flags, can we be that again?

Three steps to getting our country back

1.)Neither you, nor the people you're disagreeing with, know what's best for everyone. Typically, people know what's best for themselves, but when making policy for everyone, sucking it up and going with your second-best answer is almost invariably the best policy.

2.)Countries, by their nature, are nationalist. Expecting them to like us more than themselves is silly. Good diplomacy, and being well respected, is important. Being everyone's best friend is not.

3.)You don't need a law to promote tolerance of anyone. That's not what the law is for. The government shouldn't be telling you what right and wrong are. They are there to prevent civil disputes and foriegn invasion. Obviously, we'd like to see everyone getting a fair shot at life. But you don't have a magic right not to be offended, and expecting everyone to use their resources to solve your problems is going to make you enemies, and further split our country in two. And even if that weren't the case, asking the law to police our opinions of other people is a step in a very, very ugly direction.

If you want to promote peace, tolerance, and understanding, be peaceful, tolerant, and understanding, where everyone can see you.

I know that's a lot harder than telling other people to do it on the internet, but it sounds like you love our country enough to think that it's worth it.

I hope so. Change is inevitable. It's just not always for the best.
Why is depression so rampant nowadays? Is it because money is the be all end all and that does not make for a happy society?
Corporations that exist solely for the purpose of profit have very unhappy and unfulfilled employees and customers.
We have a mostly unhealthy population due to our obsession with money and material possessions. Hollywood and the media have too much power.
Too many people seem to be in absolute denial that there is a serious problem.
How business is being conducted is bad for most everyone.
How many people have worked for incompetent managers?
I've worked for both. There is a better road but the folks in the White House live for only themselves. They are blind to the catastrophes we are all living with as a result of their leadership or inability to lead. We are paying for a war that was wrong from the beginning. We are there because of fear and irrational thought. There is a fear of debating. We should constantly question our government. It is our right and our obligation. How dare anyone put it on the shoulders of anyone? Do not let your obligation to stay knowledgeable, ask questions, dig deeper to get at the truth and vote your conscience. I don't care what anyone believes. Beliefs and values have little merit when it comes to the reality of what we are facing. We have to look at the facts and think about the kind of America we want for ourselves and the people after we are gone. If your beliefs contradict reality then you need to change your beliefs. Problems never solve themselves. But that's how lazy people solve problems. They don't deal with them. They place blame where it doesn't belong. People have never been the problem. It's something deeper. If it were then wouldn't the problems eventually be solved. Certainly it might if you believed in evolution.
I'm voting for Dennis Kucinich. I know his chances seem slim but it's possible. He is the only candidate I can vote for in good conscience. I have been doing my homework. Once upon a time, I voted Republican. But now I am very liberal and democratic. Why? Because I see the errors that the Republicans make. I see that too many of them truly are evil. They have no compassion for anyone. They do not understand that society is not perfect. How can it be when some people are ostracized? How can it be when most of the people in jail have mental illness? How can it be when drug addiction is a huge problem and we cannot seem to do anything about it? What???? We are addressing symptoms and not the causes. We have done a terrible job of diagnosing and solving problems. We are operating on fear and emotion instead of fact and reason. We are not debating like an educated people. It's shameful. Our math and science departments are pitiful and yet that is the future. We have incompetent people leading. I have seen my share of cheaters in the college classrooms. A lot of them will be leaders and vote Republican. Did you know that???
Do you understand why that is bad? I have a zero tolerance policy myself for cheating and cheaters. To cheat is a decision made by people who are alive. Study and don't procrastinate or don't be in college. You don't deserve the opportunity.

I'm not sure if you've noticed this. We have an immigration PROBLEM. Do you think it's because no one wants to come here? The only reason you remember it being that way is because back then you were young and naive.(unless you still are) I remember it being that way then too.
And by the way, ALL those countries will eventally turn to us for help. Even though we help them all now ! With food, medicine, troops if requested. I don't know what you been readin, but we do all that stuff now, more than ever. The media chooses not to dwell on those things. They would rather tell you how horrible we all are in America. Pay attention, you'lle come around.
We have "promotion "of tolerance for homosexuals. We have laws to protect the rights of homosexuals.
He just doesn't think they need to have regular "marriages".
I personally think that gay folk should have the right to be miserable like every other married person I know. And get to support the divorce lawyers for a while. Keep em off our backs.

Judging by the number of immigrants (Legal and Illegal) I'd have to say that many people still feel the the USA is the place to be. Plenty of countries still seek and receive our protection. If we're fighting for oil, I'd like to see some of it. I've never seen oil prices higher. Personally I'd start taking oil out of the middle east and put against the debt we've incurred from the war. As to the question of homosexuals, you educate tolerance, you cannot legislate it. Couple that with the idea that the constitution guarantees equal treatment under the law. I'm against setting special rules for special groups and we do it a lot lately.

I wished that you were right, but i am afraid that is not going to happen, at least, not in our lifetime. Those were some good old days though, wasn't it.
Worst thing that ever happened in my town, while I was in school is, the keg parties out in the corn field. We would all get our cars in a circle evryone turned their radio's on the same station and turned them up. Only one cop in the whole town, so we knew where he was. For real! He was in the city hall, which dubbed for everything, eating donut's. He was so fat, he couldn't catch anyone anyway.
I wished our children could have known what that was like. And, no one had ever heard of dope. That was a word we used for the slow kids in the class. What a dope!
The worst thing that happened in my town was 8 people got axed into little pieces, and it was the talk of the town! But, that happened almost 100 years ago!

It doesn't surprise that you say you don't believe in God. It's a sad place to be. I love this nation, and I believe in God, the same God that continues to bless this nation ever since its begininngs.

You say there is no tolerance for homosexuals, but if you pull your head out of the funk long enough, you'll realize we all, al who are citizens, have civil rights. I think what you are hoping for is a special recognition for being gay. That is not acceptable, especially when trying to dilute the institution of traditional marriage, or force public schools to teach our children it is an acceptable lifestyle, that is normal, which it is not. Thank goodness we have a great leader like Bush at the helm, and I hope we have another good man in 2009.

Have a good weekend.

Civilizations, governments, languages, technology, knowledge and so much more all grow. We not only can't go backwards in the growth process, we shouldn't. Our president's name would be more appropriate if it were Monica in my opinion. Yet so many people so much worse off than we are clammer here, risk life and limb to get here illegally. There must still be a greatness that attracts them. Whatever we want this country to be it can become. We have to want it bad enough to make it what we want it to be. That is one of the truly great things about the US. We can change it but we have to want to change it enough to do something about it.

We can never be what we were, we can be better! This country is as great as it ever was only different. You are not the person you were in High School, no one ever is what they were unless they never grow up. Yes, it does seem that the scale has tipped in favor of the wealthy, that has happened before in our history, starting with the first generation of settlers. But the pendulum will swing the other way, it always has; when the middle class get tired enough of being taken advantage of by the other two classes of our nation, things will change again. Be patient, the change is not too far off! The natives are getting restless & with that change is not far behind!

I guess anything is possible, but our leaders have been selling us out for so long, I don't think it's possible in my lifetime. Clinton Sold us out to the Chinese. Bush is selling us out to big business. I think we would have to close the borders and nationalize Wal-Mart, Halliburton Exxon. and Lockheed. A lot of people still want to live here, and they are in the process of replacing you and me and the people we think of as Americans, and they work for less and don't complain because they are happy to be here. They are used to being treated like morons by the government because they still have it better here than where they came from.. The politicians dont mind, as long as they get their votes. Bush and co want to bring this country back to the 1930's and eliminate the middle class. They want a slave and master society like they have been creating in various South American countries over the past few decades. The trick is to be on the side that's wining.

Times change! And it was good back then! I was in school in the 50's, and even living with the threat of the bomb, and the cold war, going on, this was a great country!
When you pledged allegiance to the flag, you could do it , and mean it! You can't do that now! It doesn't mean t he same thing as it did then!
The only thing I disliked, back then was segregation! But the issues this country faces now are not to be believed! And I am not surprised anymore by WHAT Bush does! His followers swallow his crap, hook, line and sinker! And then jump in our stuff, with both feet, if we dare criticize them!
Well, the world they are creating is going to be something out of a nightmare! and when they begin to pay for their ignorance, and trust me, the bill is going to be high! I only hope my family can find a decent place to go!
