I'm from Niagara.
Plan on going to Canada if u are sight seeing.
I guess that requires a passport now, not like the old days.
I haven't heard of many issues around western NY. My sister lives on Grand Island and my brother in North Tonawanda.
It's a pretty friendly place.
as the cabbie said, u should always know something to keep from getting ripped off whether it is about the roads, your car, your house, plumbing, etc.
have a good trip.

When here stop in a bar or restaurant and ask the owner what's interesting to see and the best way to get there. Never take out your wallet or use your cell phone on the street. Never carry all your cash or credit cards on you.Always leave some cash & another credit card or traveler checks in the hotel safe so that If you are robbed at least you will have something to fall back on. Carry your cell phone in your pocket & know what street you are on if you need to call 911. If a situation doesn't feel right leave ASAP! Check free hotel transportation.. Some hotels may have free buses to the Niagara Falls Seneca Casino, or call the casino to find out where to catch their Casino bus in the city. One bus fare to get you to that casino bus may be cheaper than a cab.

if you will be drinking on this trip, be careful that the cab does not take advantage. one of the cabs was notorious for double charging drunk people.
Have a safe trip.
