I sometimes think my female betta gets lonely... what kind(s) of common fish can live with her?? i am setting up a 10 gallon tank with a heater that i will keep around 80 degrees farenheight. under gravey filter cause bettas (especilly females) HATE fast current water. (I've been doing my home work and know more about them than my mom!!)
P.S. do i need a light??

Hi Betta girl
Here is some advice
I think it's great that you're upgrading to a bigger tank, great I love to hear that
If you're thinking on getting some tropical fish in there with her, yes you should have a light, you're suppose to leave it on for 10-12 hours during the day, and turn it off for 12-14 hours at night
Personally I don't like these undergravel filters, they get clogged up way to easy, I prefer the whisper filter
Anyway, if you get a filter that hangs, you can always control the waterflow, they all have a know to adjust the flow
As for other fish to add, here are some to choose from and are out of peronel experience
6 zebra danios (they are schooling fish)
2-3 corydoras like a pepper cory (bottom feeder)
3 balloon mollies
3 sunburst platies
And maybe if you want a couple of betta FEMALES, not males (it's proven that females can live together, but there must be at least 3 because they are choosing the so called pekkingorder)
Hope that helps
Good luck
EB
P.S.: Any more questions, feel free to email me

Undergravel filters don't generally work very well because it just traps waste in the water. A better option would be a HOB (hang on the back) filter with a higher water level, only half an inch from the plastic top would be good. That will give a slight current (small enough that it won't bother your Betta girl) and keep your water sparkling.
For other fish, you could have some other female Bettas (You can either have one female, or you can have 3+, if you have two, the alpha female will beat up on the lesser female. The more females, the less aggression each fish recieves), 3-4 Cory Cats would be good, they are peaceful bottom feeders that will eat any left over food (they don't eat poop). Good schooling fish would be Neon Tetras, Cardinal Tetras, Phantom Tetras, Bloodfin Tetras, or any other small finned fish. AVOID nippy fish like Tiger Barbs (they will shred your Betta's fins) and hyper fish like Danios (they are very stressful on the slow moving Betta). Also, a female will probably not (but might) attack fish with long fins like Fancy Guppies, so it depends on your Betta as far as that goes... Good luck!
EDIT: You cannot keep male and female Bettas together unless they are only temporarily there for spawning, in which case they need to be carefully conditioned first. They male and femal Betta will still fight and one will lose.

females are generally short finned so they can handle currents, long fin males can as their fins pick up drag and cause them swimming problems.
So you can get a HOB filter, and it is even the better thing to do in this case.
Anyway, white cloud minnows are good along with a bottom fish like a small school of cories.
Edit: for the people below me, that is complete wrong info that your spreading. Not all bettas are killers, and i bet you people believe that males will fight to death....
Geez, give people a betta or two and they think they are experts....

you need to make sure you give your new tank a week or 2 before adding alot of other fish to the tank so it can cycle the water properly and build up slowly adding 1 or 2 small non aggressive community fish every week or 2 but try not to overstock it , maybe stop at 6 small fish you might want to add a light since most fish need 12 hours of light per day

Believe it or not female bettas can be together so you can get a new female. They will only fight if they see a male!
Other than that any fish that isnt a fin nibbler will do!

I would keep them in a ten gallon tank with gravel and some floating live plants. I like java furn. I also use duckweed..LOL. sense i can find it in a local pond..The bettas love to hide under it..

Well, if your Betta fish is a male, make sure that its tankmate is a female(betta) because if it were a male(betta) and male(betta) in the same bowl, they are going to start a fight(one will die.) No Betta fish can only be with betta fish. Male betta fish with female betta fish yes! Male betta fish and male betta fish no! female and female....um not sure, hehe.
PS i also hav a betta fish two though. but i dont know which is female or male? so they r in seperate bowls, but i put the bowls next to each othr.

A light is not required, but you will find it nice so that you can see your fish better.
Most any peaceful community fish will do very well with a female betta.

no! do not put any fish in with a betta. the betta will kill it fast. it will be spending money. bettas are short for siemmese fighting fish. and they fight! do not do that. the betta live alone. any more questions just email me. clownn88@yahoo.com
