Males are pretty, with long flowing tales. They will "display" by getting brighter and "mouthing" the side of the tank if you annoy them, which is disgraceful. They can be trained to come up for feeding if they hear a sound you make and even recognize you. females are small, dull looking and have no flowing tail. Just a note: they aren't called fighting fish" for nothing. Their aggression is not limited to other boy-betas. They will attack and kill any fish they feel might be prettier than they. Always introduce a new fish in the bag for longer than usual to see if the Beta attacks.

it certainly isnt always based on fin length, color, and aggression as in exxperienced fishkeepers will tell you.
As males are naturally short finned like females.
Female can have long fins, just look at my halfmoon females.
Color- both males and females are the same in coloration
aggression- some females can destory males, and other males are very timided.
The best way to tell is by looking under the fish< inbetween the two ventircles is a white dot on females< thats the egg tube> males dont have that>
for more betta help< please see my betta site http://www.bcaquatics.com

male betas have the pretty long fins. They are the"prettier" of the two. Females look like they don't have fins. They just look like plain, yet colorful fish. The place where you buy them can tell you. If they can't - - - R U N!!!! Once you see the two, you'll understand why I say R U N!!!!!

Okay, as others have said, males have longer, flowing fins while females have short ones.
However, my response is more because you stated in your answer to another question that you are only keeping them apart because you haven't identified their genders yet.
(The question you answered is here:)

Please do NOT put your two bettas together!
Firstly, males cannot live with any other betta, male or female. It is a common myth that males can live with females peacefully. This is not true. Males and females should only be put together if they have been carefully conditioned and are intended for spawning.
Secondly, females cannot live peacefully together in groups of four and below. They will only live peacefully once they have established a pecking order amongst themselves and identified a "dominant female". This is very difficult to do in groups of 4 and below, and virtually impossible to do in a pair.
So...sorry, I know this is off-tangent, but I just wanted to let you know.
