Two weeks is not nearly long enough to visit the USA.
You will fly into LAX, so for sheer convenience I suggest you start with California.
This state has much to see and do, but this depends on the type of things you enjoy.
Are you the Hollywood/Disneyworld type or the National Parks type?
In California I would not miss LA, San Francisco, San Diego, Yosemite National Park or Lake Tahoe.
From Tahoe it is a short drive across into Nevada to Carson City and Reno (if you don't go across to Vegas from LA, then Reno is worthwhile)
This California tourism site might prove helpful:

And just look at how beautiful Tahoe is:

If you stay on the west coast, drive up to Seattle, Washington, passing through beautiful Oregon. Everywhere you look in this state it's beautiful.

Moving a few states to the east, South Dakota is another lovely state full of surprises.
Mount Rushmore, The Badlands (breathtaking) and the Crazy Horse monument all make this state worth the visit.

Of course if you fly to the east coast, NYC is a must, as is Washington DC, (Maryland), Boston (Massachusetts) and Philadelphia (Pennsylvania).
Each of these major cities are full of wonderful sights, and each have a unique history and quality about them.

Texas too is an awesome state; Galveston and Dallas both lovely places to visit.

It's not worth mentioning my favourite of all places in the USA, (Yellowstone National Park) unless you have at least a week just to spend there!
Montana and Yellowstone NP (mostly in Wyoming) alone are worth the trip over!

Spongify I'm an Australian too, trust me when I tell you two weeks is not long enough.
It takes a day to get over jet-lag and (if this is your first trip) another to get your bearings, and adapt to the driving on the right side.
If you cannot extend you trip, just choose two or three states, do some online research and decide what you want to see before arriving.
Have all your travel arrangements (be it flights, or hire cars)organized before leaving Oz.

And have an awesome time.

Since you're coming from Australia, I'm guessing you'll be flying to the west coast of the US. If you can't get more than 2 weeks you will be very limited in where you can go. Assuming I'm correct that you'll be going to the west coast, what time of year you travel would be critical to destination recommendations. Since your winter is our summer, are you planning to travel soon (since it's your winter) or will you be coming later in the year? Right now, I'd recommend San Francisco and Los Angeles, then maybe Zion and Bryce Canyon. Then choose maybe one of these: Lake Tahoe, Rocky Mt National Park, Grand Teton or Yellowstone. All of these areas are beautiful but maybe not so good if you go any later than say mid Sept. If you go later than Sept you might want to go to Grand Canyon, which is really too hot at this time of year. If you want to include information on what time of year you'll be here that's going to make it easier for us to give you a good answer. I'd encourage you to take more time if you possibly can. New York is a great place to visit but I don't see how you fit it all in in 2 weeks. That's why I'm suggesting places closer to the west coast.

No offense to the writer from Texas but I'd hardly call it a top US vacation destination. I've found it pretty boring each time I've been there. It's all flat and the cities are smoggy. Whenever I'm there I can't wait to leave. And because Texas is so big it takes forever to get out.

I live in the US, so if I had to go to any number of states for 2 weeks, I would start in Arizona, see the Grand Canyon and Sedona, then go up to Utah to see Zion and Bryce Canyon, then spend the majority of the time in Wyoming. Splitting it between Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Its a great trip that I went on and would do it again. There is so much to see and do. All these places have incredible natural beauty and are amazing.

You will get a load of people just naming their own state but It is all about personal preference and what you want out of your holiday.

Maybe tell us what you are looking for? Beaches, mountains, oceans, nightlife, outdoors activities, historical places of interest or climate? Each state is different and all have their own unique things to offer.

Are the any specific landmarks that you really wish to see for example the Grand Canyon, if so build your holiday around those things.

Good Question - If this was your first trip to the USA, I would suggest Washington DC. Other suggestions would be New York (nothing like it in the world), Miami would be a third (shows diversity works)....

I, after 24 years would like to go to Miami in Florida, then I would go back to Texas where I am originally from, Texas is big, and has a little of everything. And we are nice folks.
