Car, caravan is the answer. Best combination is a capable four wheel drive e.g. Land Cruiser, Hilux, Patrol etc.

Cousin recently did the trip with wife (grey nomads) and says you have to book into some caravan parks at least the day before, preferably earlier and be in by 4pm otherwise they give the site to someone else. They also did the Canning Stock route in a 4WD party.

I have driven around Oz in a Roadtrain only but I'd reccomend car and caravan for the reason the when you get into a town, you can park your caravan in a camping ground then take the car to a shoppping centre or various tourist activities alot more easily. One other thing: please dont drive at night time, whether its a car or campervan, It is just soooooooo dangerous for anything other than a large truck to be out after dark. I have personally seen people involved in accidents with animals at night and they have been injured, or their cars been written off even 2 people died when they hit a camel.

Yep. I once did a few days' travel in a Winebago thing in the Northern Territory. Never again. It was really frustrating not being able to get to some places because the road was unsuitable. With a caravan you can unhitch it and still be mobile,
