they killed the pentium series becasue the company at that time was not doing very good so they went in a total new direction. it just has to do with branding. if they did not change there branding, the intel c2d would of been the pentium v.

The pentiums are over. It was decided that after the p4 "Prescotts", the core of the CPU was too hot. So, a different approach has to be taken.
Intel and AMD are going multicore. The current models are the Conroe dual core and the Kenstfield quads for intel, and amd will release the k10 series later this year.
The hardware boom is still happening. CPUs are still getting faster, although development costs are increasing as you make smaller transistors. (Remember ... ignore clockspeeds; it's an old Intel marketing trick, if you were to compare an AMD single core CPU with an Intel single core CPU (like prescott or northwood vs a socket 939 CPU) each with the same clockspeed, you'd find the AMD CPU was a lot faster)).
Currently, we're at 65 nm; an atom is maybe 0.14 nm in diameter, and that's the limit ... unless we build optical chips perhaps or quantum computers.

Hmmm.... Intel will be quite shocked to hear that their company is not doing well. :-)
Pentium is the name given to a processor series developed by Intel. The Pentium lineage went from Pro, II, III, 4, M, D, Extreme Edition, E, to Dual Core.
Core being the name of the day, if you will. Basically, it's just marketing today just like yesterday.
Hope this helps...
:-)
