First of all, if you are keeping a goldfish and guppies, you need 2 tanks, because goldfish are coldwater fish and guppies are warm water fish. Goldfish don't need heaters and guppies usually do. Guppies prefer temperatures around 76-80 degrees F. For a regular goldfish, you should probably have a pond if you really want to keep it in style. Otherwise, a very big tank with a very efficient filter. They can grow up to 2 feet long and are very messy fish.

Guppies are much easier. You can keep 5-7 guppies in a 10 gallon tank with a 25 watt heater and a small filter. A little gravel for the bottom is nice, but optional. So are plants and decorations. Then you just need a good water conditioner, a little fish food and you're good to go. Don't forget to add your fish slowly (start with 2 and don't add more until the tank is cycled). Read up on cycling an aquarium in the link below.

Go to Walmart your your local pet store and buy a basic 20 gal starter fish tank set, 1-11/2 pounds of gravel per gallon of water, a book about raising fish, water conditioner, and a water test kit. Gold fish will out grow a fish bowl or 10 gal tank very fast. I have two 1 yr old goldfish in a 20 gal tank and they are each 6 inches long now. Do not just get a "fish bowl" like many people do. It is not a good home for any fish. They all need a good filter, light and aeration for a healthy happy fish. You will need to let your tank run without any fish in it for about a week, this is called cycling your tank. Then add only a couple fish at a time this gives your tank time grow the good bacteria needed to keep ammonia levels in check.

Two seperate tanks. Goldfish are cold water fish, while guppies are warm water fish.

Goldfish need really good filtration, and some plants.

Guppies need a heater, filtration, and plants.

You'll also need water conditioner, and you'll need to cycle your tank before putting the fish in.

i would not mix goldfish and guppys in 1 tank because goldfish give off a lot of ammonia and guppys might die i have a 10 gallon tank for guppys and a 2 gallon for my goldfish plus a 30 gallon for other tropical fish set up at this time and all fish are fine

Nothing. Goldfish are the pigeons of the "pet fish" world. Which means do whatever you want as long as the water you use is clean and not full of additives (like chlorine in city water). One thing to watch out for are decorative shells. Be sure they aren't dyed and didn't come from the ocean. Goldfish are carp and they are fresh water fish, not salt water fish. Three fish for a 10 gallon tank is probably the max, tho. And give them edible plants; don't let the pet store sell you expensive ones unless you like them. And don't over feed them.
