open range preferably, but in Texas there are some in Garza county, there are some in Oklahoma and some states to the North, Also, New Mexico has some buffalo....as does Arkansas,Wyoming, and a few others....Don't have that many to stampede...would worry more about cattle stampeding, depending on where you are at....Take it you didn't or have not been to a ranch?...Also, the buffalo used to roam on the "Trail Of Tears"....

The bison ("buffalo") inhabited the Great Plains of the United States and Canada in massive herds, ranging from the Great Slave Lake in Canada's far north to Mexico in the south, and from eastern Oregon almost to the Atlantic Ocean, taking its subspecies into account.
The Great Plains are the broad expanse of prairie and steppe which lie east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States and Canada. This area covers parts of the U.S. states of Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In Canada the term prairie is more common, and the region is known as the Prairie Provinces or simply "the Prairies".

I believe this is referring to the US plains in the 1800s, when buffalo were plentiful and roamed freely
