I'm trying to divide up an aquarium so I can breed my bettas and then leave them to recover in the same aquarium - therefore I need to blacken out the glass I want to put in to avoid additional stress on my breeding male and female by seeing the fry or each other.

I'm sure there must be some kind of paint being as you can get painted decorations for inside the aquarium, but I've been unable to find any.

I don't think there is any paint that is safe for aquariums. Even soap can kill fish if used inside the tank. Maybe find another way to divide the tank without paint. Maybe scratch up the plexi to give it the "frosted" look, or buy some actual frosted plexi to use as the divider.

Good luck!

Hi there, I do not advise to chip of the color and add the decoration to the aquarium. I am not sure with what material that decoration is made. I suggest you to look for other alternatives. Like stones that can be formed into a nice cave when placed against each other, empty broken coconut shell ( with all the coco completely removed) it is a natural shell so it will stay in your tank for a very long time and will harbor some healthy bacteria. I have a few pieces of them in the aquarium and my fish love to hide in between them.

Laytex pool paint or aquarium paint are both ok. However glass tinting plastic will work the best and won't peel off glass, even in the water. Or if you are using a glass divider, get a dark tinted glass piece with sanded edges.

Pool paint or Epoxy Marine paint are both safe for inside an aquarium. Cheaper and easier though would be to get a sheet of opaque plexiglass.

Krylon fusion spray paint is safe in my experience. I have read many experiences similar to mine where someone painted their filter tube or pvc with no ill effect on the fish. It is made to bond to plastic, but it will hold to clean glass just fine too. Much cheaper than epoxy or marine paint too, only a couple bucks for a can that will last you a while. Happy painting.

Make sure you let the paint fully cure.
If you can still smell that fresh paint smell, then it's probably still emitting the solvents that help cure the paint and that's what can harm your fish. But most fully cured paints should be fine as long as they don't break up in water. I'd use epoxy.
