We live in a pretty new house, 2 years old, so I don't think our sink pipes are clogged or anything. But it smells sorta like rotting food. When I run my dishwasher I can smell it extra well. What can I do to clean this out. Will running a cycle with bleach help???? Tell me if you've had this problem and what you did.
Thanks!!!

Nope, I don't have a garbage disposal.

If you think it's the dishwasher.. You can run an empty cycle.. Use some sweetened/unsweetened drink mix like Kool-aid or Country Time anything like that the citric acid in the drink mix will clean and freshen your dishwasher...I do this once a month it's cheaper than Jet-Dry Good luck..

If the smell is in the house all the time ... its not the dishwasher but some wood or something is getting wet, possible underlayment in the floor or something under the sink. Best bet is to get a builder, or building inspector out to look to see if you have a major problem building. Could be that the builder skimped in areas and it is something you can not even see.

Look at and clean out the area under your sink, pull out the dishwasher and make sure all the lines are connected and there is no real soft wood in the floor. Open each cupboard around the dishwasher and check for soft wood. You can use any sharp instrument to check for soft wood, like an ice pick, a sharp nail, a screwdriver, etc.

That is where I would start.

Clean out your dishwasher thoroughly.
Follow the manufacturers instructions.
Get rid of any food particles left in the trap.
When this is done then run the full cycle.
Buy a proper dishwasher cleaning product for best effect. (can be brought at the supermarket)

If the smell does not go away then there has to be another cause. I would be looking at all areas of the house for any wet/rotting problems.

Could there be a dead & rotting animal close by the kitchen. In the walls, cupboards??? Stranger things have happened. If this is so you will just have to wait for it to deteroriate & for the smell to go away.

Check the dishwasher cleanliness first.

Dishwashers have a built in garbage disposal to deal with small amounts of food left on dishes. You should put some baking soda in your soap containers and run it through a rinse cycle.

If you have a garbage disposal, that's probably what it is. The dishwasher empties into the disposal. Put some lemon peels down your disposal and grind them up. Run hot water through....:)

hmmm Ok run a cup of vinegar through your dish washer....Pour some bleach down your drains let it soak for a half hour then run hot water through...Good Luck!
