Coffee is acidic so in large amounts it will change your soil pH. Coffee grounds have a pH reading from 3.0 to 5.0

Use no more than 1lb/100 sq ft unless on acid loving plants

If you wish to use them around roses balance the pH with lime or wood ashes because roses do not tolerate either salt or acidic soil. .
N-P-K: _2-4-2
4 parts coffee ground [2 - 0.3 - 0.2]
1 part bone meal [3-15-0 ]
1 part wood ashes [0-1-3]
Coffee is acidic while wood ashes are basic so this is a balanced use of the two. Bone meal provides the missing phosphorus. However coffee is not particularly "slow release" as are most organic fertilizers. The nitrogen will be available quickly so you have to watch out applying high quantities at one time, better to apply smaller amounts several times. Do not use wood ashes on clay dense soil as they encourage compaction.

A near neutral pH ensures the greatest number of micronutrients are released from the soil. Roses in particular like pH 6.0- 7.0, with pH 6.5 being optimal. Since slightly acidic soils range form pH 5.8 to 6.5 and extremely acid soils range from pH 4.0-5.0 roses are not considered acid loving plants but they tolerate a slight acidity. http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7465.html

coffee grinds acidifies the soil, changing its PH. The PH scale ranges from 1- 14, below 7 is acid and above 7 is alkaline (or base). If your soil is alkaline it will most likely help your roses grow since they prefer a more acidic soil, around 6.5 or so. Be careful not to acidify the soil too much, this may do more harm then good. My suggestion would be to check the soil's pH either with a store bought kit or by sending out soil samples to your local testing center (this may cost about $15).

Aaaaarrrggghhhh!!!!!!!!

I am a rose grower. I have a section of my garden dedicated to roses. I have never, ever heard of coffee grinds to help roses grow!!!!!!!!!!!

I would be very reluctant to put them on my roses.
I use manure, manure & more manure - lots of it.
Watered in well.
I give my roses some brought rose fertilizer but only in small quantities.
Lots of water.
Lots of sun.
Lots of mulch.

Please don't do this to your roses.

they are greater like compost than fertilizer. They relax the soil and shop it from drying out. they do no longer supply a shot of nutrients like manure or vigoro might. permit's settle for it you will possibly desire to eliminate those espresso grounds besides - you will possibly as nicely positioned them around the roses.

They do. Roses are acid-loving plants. The coffee grounds add acidity to the soil. You can also use coffee on Azaleas, hibiscus, and hydrangea.
