I have a 14 year old son who for some reason rarely takes showers, I have a nice home and we are very clean but for some reason he likes his hair long and greasy and I also notice he doesnt use soap, why does he want to be filthy? He smelled so bad last week that me and my younger son were gagging when he would come into the room where we were watching t.v, and yes I do tell him he smells but he doesnt seem to care or mind, am I missing something here?

You can always spray him down with the hose. Hmm..that's a tough one, maybe take him to a homeless shelter and have him volunteer, he'll see that they live in filth, not able to shower and maybe appreciate that he has a home to live in and will start taking showers. He's just a boy, eventually he will learn...

There is more here than why he wont take a shower. The question is, have you TOLD him to take a shower? He is 14. When I was 14 and my mama told me to take a shower, I took a shower. I don't care if I just got out and was dripping wet.
And stand there and make sure he uses soap if you have to. You are his mom... it ain't no big deal.

You might need to seek some therapy for why he doesn't want to. But getting him to should not be a problem. If it is, you have more problems than that.

Bribe him. My youngest sister is 13 and she refused to get into the shower unless my Mom sung her a song and carried her to the bathroom, once. The kid is a little weird but funny. Offer to buy him a CD or a new shirt or something if he takes a shower (with soap!) every day for a week.

Things have sure changed. When I was 14 if mom said take a shower I would take a shower, or get a *****-slap, and then take a shower. I my son were 14 he could shower or I would shower him and he would not like the shower or the trip to the barber shop.

Stop feeding him, giving him money, pull all privileges until he bathes every day. Plain and simple.
Notify the school as well. They will nail you on child neglect. Bottom line: be a parent. No negotiations no compromise. 14 years old do what he is told. When he acts more like an adult, treat him accordingly. Let him ***** and whine but hold your ground and don't make excuses for him.

Does he have any skin problems he's not telling you about?
He may be one of those kids who gets acne on his chest and shoulders and doesnt want anyone to see it?

Take him to a male doctor if he will not let you look?

If he is getting a reaction to soap buy him foaming cleanser and tell him if he will not shower he has to wash all over with a sponge instead?

Unfortunately lack of concern with hygiene can also be a sign of mental problems however with any luck its just a phase he's going thru?

Tell him no girl will ever want to go out with him if he smells bad or has greasy hair, or threaten to ground him, or take away some of his stuff...if that doesn't work...spray him with a hose in his sleep? Good luck!

Ew! I'm a 15 year old girl, and that is repulsive!
Something is definetly wrong.
Every boy I know showers regularly, and takes care of themselves.
Try and find out why he insists on doing this.

my brother started that at the same age. he is now 24 and takes a shower only on his days off of work because, and I quote, "I'm just gonna get dirty tomorrow!"
I'm pretty sure he is a virgin still and he has never had a girlfriend.

Once your son starts figuring out that girls will like him if he is clean, he might change his habits.
