Hi

I had a slovak au pair who was so unbelievably racist that we told her she had to leave. She could not believe that the UK allowed Black people etc into this country and believed it should be white only. This was down to her country having such a racist government and honestly, although i am white, I fetl it was totally wrong and couldnt have her living in my house with my children with such dire opinions and thoughts. but unfortunately it is cultural and it is what makes different cultures different from ourselves - we only think we have racists in the UK until we meet people with similar views from beyond.

I can appreciate how upsetting it is but there is really nothing you or i can do but to try and re-educate and understand the complex environment from where they come from.

If this presents them with problems maybe they should stay in their little world and not venture past their borders as it presents too many problems

L

For the same reason that would be suprised to see a black bank manager. It's not racist it is the unexpected.
They have not realised the change in the racial make up of this country since the 1950's and as a consequence do not realise that people such as yourself are born here. They are not aasking silly questions they are catching up with the unexpected.

i think this may be misseducation in their own countries?? you cant blame them! they know the rate that we let just anyone in!! maybe they are just ignorant to the fact that black people are born in england too!!! i would not hold it against them!! black/mixed race people have more of a right to the world than anyone as if you look back in time africa and the middle east is where the human race originated from!! the world does not belong to anyone!!! people should go with the times!!!! and appreciate their true heritage!!

Because in Easter Europe most of the African Americans with dark skin ARE immigrants. They think that the same thing is happening with the U.S, that Africans are immigrating over here.

I agree with the RssR and Girly-girl.... Why do people insist on being called.... African American, japanese American, or whatever..... if you're born in America.. you're American!

As to answer your question... it's probably because that's all they are used to, and just assume that you're from Africa as well as them.

Pinky.. "more of a right to the world"? it should be equal, no one has MORE of a right.

Not all are...but, lol, I was asked that silly question for the first time in my life this week: Are you from america? (I live in Texas) LOL, I was like, are you kiddin' me? I am well groomed, speak and present myself in an educated manner so I am not sure why it was asked, especially since the woman said she was from Louisiana, there are plenty of black people there who have never even seen Africa. Bottom line, people need exposure to other kinds of people.

Although I am a white Canadian, I taught for many years in Africa and have both African and African-American friends and ex-students. I well remember one of my Ugandan students, who had gone to college in the USA, commenting on how difficult he found it to be always taken for an African American - and added that it was much more common for African Americans to make assumptions about him, and pass judgements on his 'difference' to them, than for causasian Americans to do so.

African Americans on tours of duty in African countries tend to find they are the objects of considerable envy by the local population.

" what part of Africa are you from?" probably results from the fact that the blacks do not call themselves American, but rather "African American", which of course is bull crap, as most have not come from Africa.
So when someone asked you what part of Africa are you from, they're just responding to your wishes to be recognized as Africans instead of American.
In response to your additional information, if you will read my answer carefully, your situation is exactly what I made reference to, that being the desire of most Blacks in American to be recognozed and refered to as "African Americans" regardless of place of birth or family backround.

I'm sure they're just curious. Some people from European countries admire black people. Not everything is because of prejudice.

Because they are ignorant just like many "White Americans" here.
