Of course it varies depending on the size of the air conditioner, but it easily uses more electricity than anything else in the house.

This varies from the brand and size AC used , the space to be cooled, how many degrees of cooling needed and how high the level of humidity. It's generally more economical to leave the AC on to keep the space cool than to have to re-cool it after the AC's been off.
