It was merely the Vulcan way of greeting people and giving a "blessing" on their journeys...

Or it could have just been a good cover-up to the Vulcan's could flip everyone off.

...a long time ago, I read how this "split" finger sign started...on the set one day a few were trying to see if they could separate their fingers...not all can do it...when the producer thought it would make a good "greeting" or "goodbye" for a Vulcan character...thus the hand sign was born and caught on...
