World War Two was the impetus for the United Nations. It's clearly mentioned in the preamble of the UN Charter, where the organization's chief purpose is to "avoid the scourge of war". Chapter Seven of the Charter gives to the UN Security Council the authority to adopt resolutions calling for the creation and dispatch of peace enforcement missions. There was a Military Committee created to assist the Council in this endeavor. The committee was to be composed of the heads of the military staffs of the five great powers ( U.S., USSR, Great Britain, France and China), or their designated representatives. Member states are tasked under the Charter to make armed forces available on call by the Security Council. The U.S. passed the UN Support Act in 1947 to signal it was going to meet that edict.
