I have seen it happen several times. Schools generally don't want to see you fail. So, you need to be able to clearly explain 1) what caused your earlier failure, 2) what you learned from the experience that will help you be more successful in the future and 3) what you have done to overcome the past problems.

All three parts are very important. First, they need to see you had a legitimate issue. They can understand if a close family member died, etc. Second, they want to know what you learned. If a family member died, and you were having trouble, why didn't you seek help/advice from the school before failing out? In other words, explain how you learned not to try to cope all on your own and to seek the help that was available before it was too late. This helps them feel that you're not going to fail out the next time a crisis occurs. Finally, explain how you have prepared to return to school and be successful.

If you can do those things, there is a good chance you can get back into school. And even if, for some reason, that school doesn't let you back in, there are other schools.

I went through a very rough two years--was physically assaulted by several other students, lost a major scholarship, had two major car accidents, and my mom died. Then, my dad quit his job. When he finally got a new job, his income was in the poverty level for our area...for almost a year. Add on credit card debt and a bout with depression. Plus, we had a massive Financial Aid paperwork screw-up that resulted in a loss of one semester.

I wanted to drop out so bad (in fact, I did, once, for a short time) but my Dean really kept encouraging me to keep going.

It's gotten much better since then, and I will graduate (thanks to my school's help), albeit two years late.

One of my friends got suspended for a year because his GPA fell under 2.0, but he has been readmitted next year.

The bottom line is that your school will give you many chances if you show that you are serious about your education.

Sure this happened to me....alot was going on in my life and I was so depressed. I stopped going to class... even before final exams I just crapped some webpages off of the internet together and submitted it as my final paper in my ENGL 102 course. My professor was a Graduate Teaching Assisstant and he claimed that I plaigerized and didn't come to class. Of course, I did plaigerize and I didn't come to class, though I claimed to him that I have been sitting in the back all semester and that I copied my paper as a joke. He didn't think it is funny, nor did I. My file was reviewed by a judicial board and it was looking like I was going to get thrown out. Well, I was'nt having it! I paid too much money! I walked striaght to the president of the university and told him my situation. I focused on my situation at home and told him that I am ready to become a virtuous student. He was suprised by my great speech and gave me some appeal papers and I told the university board. They bought my story, erased my academic record, and I am going back to college in the fall. Congrats for me! Good luck on your situation! Look online for the appeal papers!

Yes. I could've been reaccepted, but I decided the hassle wasn't worth it & just didn't do it. I was fine without that particular degree.

Not me, but I know a guy who got booted out of Stanford because he was not keeping up due to personal problems, he reapplied, got accepted again, and went on to finish 2 Ph.D.'s.
