How old is she? That would make a difference I think....If old enough and your finances allow, she may me totally ok with a purchased and not a homemade costume. You never know. You could always say that Uncle (whatever your name is) is not very good at sewing honey, I think we'll have to buy your costume...is there anything special you want to be?
For me when I was a kid, it wasn't about store bought or homemade, it was more about the choice of getting to be what I wanted. That's the point of the costume.....getting to pretend for that one night that you're someone else...even for a kid. Little girls can always be princesses in their own bedroom, and little boys can always be Superman at home...but on halloween, everyone aknowldeges your alter ego, even the grumpy old lady down the road will admit that you're a princess...so, my advice, is ask her what she wants. If it's something you can make--great! If not...it's time to buy.
Good luck, and I think it's a very noble thing that you're doing.

Well, one of the first things you could try doing is checking McCalls and/or Simplicity catologs at your local department store (if they have a sewing section) or your local sewing and fabrics store. They'll have some costume ideas you can get patterns for. You can also try checking online as there are various websites devoted to Halloween. Some are devoted strictly to decorating, some to parties, and some to costumes. Some of the best are devoted to all three. Gonna give you a couple sites to try and start getting ideas from.

Robot- get some tin pie plates or those disposable casserole dishes. This will be the chest and back plate. Make some straps out of tinfoil that go over the shoulders. Raid your junk draw and your hubby's workbench to find 'stuff' to glue on the pie plates to represent buttons and switches and controls -- bottle caps, bike reflectors, address numbers, old light switches, washers, bolts, etc. Have them wear this over grey sweats. Add a tinfoil covered baseball hat or buy one of those sparkly top hats (about a buck at party supply stores or the dollar store.) You can add silver face paint if you want. Cow -- Get a pair of white sweats. Cut out random squiggly shapes out of black felt and glue those on to represent spots. Add a pair of horns on a headband or baseball cap. Make a tail out of braided yarn and safety pin that to his rear. Have the other brother go as a cowboy. That would be so cute to have the four younger ones be cows and older brother a cowboy.

One year my mom made me a Belle outfit. You know the chick from Beauty and the Beast. She bought the fabric and the pattern of the dress from a fabric store. You will need a sewing machine also or have someone do it for you. On the night of Halloween she put me some of her makeup on and curled my hair.

When I was seven my mom/boyfriend made me the coolest costume, I thought at the time ever...a dice. They took a box that "fit me" and sprayed it white then made a circle and sprayed it black like a dice/diy...it was fun and unique!
other than that what is she into? check out buycostumes.com for ideas...you can always make something cute look dead with makeup and fake blood :)
have fun!!!

I was a white bear around that age... my mother made me an furry leg boot things that went over my feet, got me a darling little skirt and sweater and painted my face to look like a cute bear and gave me a headband with little cute white ears.
I think I was also cinderella and a .... little hippie? I think... vague memories, the candy meant more to me...
