I just got high-speed internet, and I also bought a wireless router, but I don't know how to hook up the cables. It came with a power cord and an ethernet cord, but I've already hooked an ethenet cord into my PC for my modem? Where does this ethernet cord for the router go? My router didn't come with instructions except a CD that is suppose to do all of that, but it doesn't let me go pass step 2. Please help. Thank you.

Well normal hook up is modem---->router--->computer

So you need to unplug your computer from the modem. connect a cable from the modem to the WAN / Internet port on the router. Connect a cable from the LAN port of the router to your computer. Leave the modem powered on to do this. Then power on the router -- wait a couple of minutes and power on your computer.. Run the setup If you tell us that kind of router we can tell you how to set up from your browser without using the CD at all.

Hope that helps.

If you're talking actual wireless, then the ethernet cord goes from the cable modem to the input into the router. There would be no cord from the router to your computer. Then the CD will be able to set up your internet. Hope this helps.

I have not a damn clue what you mean. I have a network and a router. Do you have two ethernet cords or something? One end of the ethernet cord goes into the computer modem the other goes in the router. And if you are having problems you should contact your service provider they are always helpful had ot call them a few times about my wireless adapter. good luck.

Is it a Linksys? if so load the cd that says "Run CD First" this is the support and driver for the Router it self The set up wizard will try to run but cancel it go to Start--> My Computer->click on the drive displaying the Linksys icon and open it search through the folders and one of them will say instructions or something along those lines click on it and it should open in Adobe reader you can then print these off OR you could let the set up wizard do all the work it will tell you how and when to do what. Print off the instructions anyway you can use them for future reference Good Luck P.S do some research @ your public library on how to make your wireless secure so others won't use your router to get on the internet.

This is going to be a little tough without you having the booklet that came with the Router.
You connect your ethernet cable from your ISP's Modem to the WAN Port on the Router, This will enable you with wireless if you need to connect any other computers then you use the other ports they are LAN ports.

The ethernet plugs into your router, your PC will plug into the router.

Having a router will allow you to have multiple computers sharing the same internet connection.

So, wall > cable/dsl modem > router > computer(s)

go to the webpage of the router's vendor. There you should find hookup instructions and advice.

Good luck!

Where you hooked up the ethernet cord to your pc, hook that to the router in the first port that says input on it.. and then plug your pc into one of the left over connections on the router.. Enjoy

The ethernet cable goes from the modem to the WAN port on the router. Then another ethernet cable goes from one of the LAN ports on the router to your computer.

Did you check the CD for the manual? Usually the manual have step by step instruction on how to connect.

If you didn't see a manual in the CD too.. then I would suggest you to call the company for the manual.

I have belkin. It came with the manual and CD. The software that I have to run to operate the router also gives me step by step instruction. Belkin also has 24 hour customer service so it helps.

Let's cover what you need to get Internet access to more than one computer at home, via wireless LAN.

1. You order or use your existing Cable or DSL Internet access.

2. Your Cable or DSL company sets up your Internet access and typically either rents or sells you a Cable or DSL "modem".

Prices for Cable or DSL Internet access vary from approximately $19 per month to $80 per month in the United States. This varies based on bandwidth, location, and provider.

At this point you have what is commonly called Broad Band Internet access.

Now you want to share that high speed connection with more than one system or you want to be able to cart your laptop all over the house and stay connected to the internet.

1. Confirm that your system has a wireless adapter or get one and install it. You need one of these for each computer.

2. Get a wireless router. I recommend the D-Link Dir-655. Get D-Link n series Adapters if you get the D-Link wireless router.

3. Plug the wireless router directly into the Cable or DSL "modem" via an Ethernet cable.

4. Unplug the electrical cord from your Cable or DSL "modem" for 30-45 seconds.

5. Plug the power cable back in.

6. Check the Cable or DSL "modem" for green lights.

7. Make sure that the properties of TCP/IP are set to Obtain IP address automatically, and obtain DNS automatically on ALL of your computers.

8. Turn on or reboot your system(s).

Now you should be able to stay connected to the Internet with all of your computers.

If you can not access the Internet from every computer:

Attempt to log in to your wireless router via your web browser (internet exploder or Firefox) by typing in http://192.168.1.1/
Then log in using admin and admin typically. Be sure to change the password to something of your own choosing.
Enable DHCP by following the instructions in the manual for your wireless router.

You only need one wireless router for you wireless LAN. One wireless router can potentially accomodate up to 253 wireless computers. My wireless router only has MAC tables for up to 32 devices.

For extra security:

1. Don't announce the SSID of your wireless router.
2. Use WPA2 if you can. WPA-PSK if not, or WEP at the least.
3. Put the MAC addresses of all of your computers into the MAC routing table of your wireless router and ONLY ALLOW from the addresses in the table of the wireless router.
4. Turn the SPI firewall of the wireless router ON.
5. Filter anonymous or incomplete packets.
