I have a linksys router and I set up a secure password I know that cause when I use my wireless laptop to connect it has a lock next to the name but when I try to login with 192.168.1.1 or whatever the number is all I have to do is enter admin as the password. Doesn't that mean it's not protected ? I'm afriad other people will use my internet since it's so easy to access.

There are actually two passwords for these routers. One is for administrative functions... admin the other is for your wireless security.. They can be the same but you have to set both.

Log back into the router.. go to admin and change the default password (which is admin) to something else.. It can be a security issue but not too much of one unless you have forwarded some ports!

There are two types of passwords for wireless routers.

A) The admin password to access the settings of the router.

B) The encryption password. USE WPA2 if it's available on your router AND on your wireless adapters.

These can be set to the same thing. They never should be though. You should always set the admin password to something of your choosing. Set the WPA2, WPA, or WEP password to something else of your choosing. MAKE it COMPLICATED. Then use a label maker or tape those to the bottom of the router. If someone is able to break into your home, your wireless network passwords should be the least of your concerns.

Turn the Broadcast SSID OFF.
ENABLE WPA2-PSK AES (if compatible with your other adapters)
Enter the MAC addresses of your wireless devices in the MAC filter table and set to ALLOW ONLY those in the table.
Only allow the DHCP server enough IPs for your devices.
Turn the SPI filter ON.
Filter anonymous or incomplete packets.

Or let the pseudo-pros leech, it's your connection.

You should change the default password on any hardware/software you have. There should be a change router admin password pg somewhere in the admin site.

That being said, I never do it to my own or for the ones I setup for other people because these passwords can be easily forgotten. Besides, with security enabled, some one will have to first guess your Wireless password to connect to your network before they can even go to the admin website

And if they do get to the admin site all they can do can be undone by pressing the reset button on the rtr itself and starting over from scratch.

hmmm... 2 plausible ideas. go into the internet browser on the laptop it is linked to the router and enter 192.168.2.a million it extremely is going to then arise with the container, the call can be admin and the password 1234. additionally on the container there'll be an occasion try entering that. From there visit protection and alter it, in case you want added tips message or if it does not artwork it would desire to need some thing else doing. Or try conserving the reset button on your router, despite if this might get rid of your password which will enable different persons to connect on your community, which would be undesirable. -thank you.

You only have to enter the password once unless you format your hard drive then you will have to re enter to password, your computer saves the password so you dont have to enter it every time. And people can connect to the router but they wont be able to access the internet because they didnt enter the routers password, dont worry you are protected.

What that means is you have set up the access to get on the Internet with your choice of WEP. WPA, or WPA-2 security, but you didn't change your admin password. Thus without changing it anyone can type in 192.168.1.1 and anyone can then change the settings.
You need to get out the booklet and re read it on how to set up your security.

After you have logged in, you need to change your password. The password Admin is the generic password and yes anyone could hack into it unless you change the password.
