This site will tell you everything you need to know about doing it without fish. Most fish deaths occur when a tank is not properly cycled. Do it this way and you can add them when you want.

did u cycle?
you will need to cycle, so getonly about 2 fishes for 2-3 weeks until the tank settles.
then you can stock, but it must be slowly. Small tanks are worest, as the rule is:
The larger the tank the increase change for success, smaller will decrease your chances,
10 gallon is small, so you have little room for error.
stock slow and not to many fishes.

hey!
i just got a 10 gallon tank about 5 months ago and when i first got it, i got about 10 fish. i had a good variety, and like 2 of each fish. the guppy died after a few days. and one of my mollies died a few weeks later. i would suggest starting with about 4-6 fish, and buy them in pairs or triples. i absolutely LOVE molly fish. i have 4 right now, 2 black ones, an orange one and a silver/white one. and sometimes they come pregnant, so then a few wks after u buy them they have babies (which are SO adorable!). this actually happened to me, but a few of the babies got eaten by the mother before i could catch them. another good option is guppies. i actually have a few baby guppies right now in a breeder net that i got for free from the pet store b/c they didnt want them. they are very pretty and get along with my baby molly that i have right now just great!
long story short: 2-3 mollies and 2-3 guppies
hope this helps!

With a ten gallon tank, you can have up to 12 fish. I would start off with a group of 6 for one week and follow it with another 6 another week.

many people will not agree with me but, i actually started my 10 gallon tank with feeder goldfish. 2 left to survive and they are now grown to 2 inches long.
i would say start off with 2 fish, not big one but, maybe 2 small fish in a 10 gallon tank.

I would say that you start with a couple of zebra danios, they are pretty hardy, this site will explain it in detail actually
