I already have an existing wireless adapter on my main desktop that feeds my internet signal to my laptop. However, whenever I am out of range I cannot get signal. I would like to be able to take my computer in a public place and get online. I am wondering if I need a wireless network card or what can I do? Thanks

Hello;

There's a few things you can do to get online anywhere... One is to buy a card that works anywhere, such as a wifi modem sold by many cell phone companies. This can be as expensive as your cell phone, and also comes with a contract, just like a cell phone... but works anywhere a cell would work. I use Sprint (had Cingular/ATT for less than 2 months, and went straight back to Sprint!). Coincidentaly, Sprint has reportedly the fastes wifi, and their plans (unlimited internet) will cost about $60/month. There is another option that will cost less...

I have a sprint Samsung A900 (the one the Razr was modeled after), and it has the capability of being used as a wifi/bluetooth modem for broadband internet! This unlimited internet on your phone would cost only $15 additionial to any plan you may have (IF you have Sprint), and would also work, anywhere your phone works... not bad!

Problems I see with using phone as a modem: possible wear N' tear on the phone (can it take the constant heat? I don't know), I've had this hi tech phone and pretty much used it as a phone only... not counting previewing features i've mentioned, as well as photo mail & such. Another issue is power; your phone's batteries won't last too long, so if you want to work out of your car, then you should have a usb to cigarrette lighter adaptor (I have one, and use my data cable for my axim, phone, and laptop for powering things in my car... I wish my motorcycle could to this!, I'd never leave it at home!!! But the drawback of having all these small devices, and then having power backup/recharge devices for them is... the hardware you have to pack around can get daunting.

Well, there you go; that's about all I can think of on the subject, except... if you don't have Sprint (according to the commercials (and their availability in your area) your access speed will apparently be about 5X slower, than ATT/Cingular.

I hope this has helped!
