ExxonMobile has spent more than $30 million campaigning against global warming science. They have created an echo chamber of lies, deceit, distortion, and misinformation which has proven almost as successful as the tobacco industry's former lies concerning the adverse health effects of cigarette smoking.
How can ExxonMobile afford to do that (and they are not the only one). Well, in 2006 they enjoyed record profits--greater than those of any US company in history, adjusted for inflation, and not including multi BILLION dollar tax subsidies on top of that.
ExxonMobile has been censured by the british royal society and various US science organizations for its practices. They have issued recent public apologies and promises not to repeat these offenses. We'll see.
You are so right about the need to focus on cleaner and more efficient fuel and alternatives. The outrage comes in from the fact you'll also be reducing profits of those who own stock in these companies--and that is a lot of good folks. They believe they have a vested interest in destroying the environment, and have bought into the lie that the harm they create is so small--they are only one person out of six billion, after all, what difference can one person make?
Ovid said, 2000 years ago, "add little to little, and soon there is a big pile." We have doubled the atmospheric carbon content in just the previous 30 years, and the rate of fossil fuel consumption has moved up so that atmospheric carbon content will double again in a much smaller period of time.
CO2 is a greenhouse gas--it traps heat. But, some folks just prefer to believe the lies, if doing so implies they need make no change in their customary habits. People fear change, except those who are buying stock in air conditioning companies...
It so astonishes me people continue to claim the science is questionable. A survey of 2000 peer reviewed papers published on climate change revealed not a single one disputing the evidence of man's contribution to global warming. Granted, NON anthropegenic warming is also possible. But 80 to 90% of the cause is due to man's activities, according to the best models we have now.
On the other hand, 53% of television and periodicals include non peer reviewed claims man has no effect, to give the story "balance." I think this is where a lot of the confusion comes in--from the popular press. The scientific reality rests firmly on the side of anthropogenic cause. In fact, because of orbital cycles, it was expected the earth should be in a COOLING trend right now, not a warming trend.

Every gallon of fuel you put in you're car at 3.00 a gallon, is taxed 82 1/2 cents. That's TAXED. Why on earth would the government want to mess with that? And when the price goes up their tax profit goes up. The government doesn't want to choke the goose that's laying golden eggs now dose it? It's the same way with Social Security. They all say something should be done to make it more secure in the future, but nothing is done about it because they use it as a slush fund when they need money. It's still the Golden Egg syndrome. Why would they want to change anything, even if it benefits the ones that put them in office?
The answer to question is GREED!

There's nothing wrong with it but it's the way the democrats are going at it. Why couldn't Al Gore simply say we need to get our act togeather and clean our enviorment up. We need to stop being so careless with our resources and do what we can to make everything better cause we will burn oursleves out if we don't. Instead he creates a global warming terror in which a lot of people are going to get rich on and for him and those pushing it aren't doing anything themselves to cut back on it!

You mean you don't know that the Repubs are owned by the oil people and in fact some are oil people, yes its true we have bio-fuels readily available like cellulosic ethanol which could make all the gas we ever needed from grass and cane by using enzymes but these people don't want to give up all that money, they don't give a rats *** if your air is dirty and we get ashma, they are making money and they will use that money to keep the people in power who will keep their money coming in.

They're successful because we're so dependent on foreign oil. Republican politicians are in bed with the oil industry (our president is an oil man himself!) and people like driving their gas-guzzling SUVs. Then there's the oil company funding of "research" which finds no link between human greenhouse gas emissions and global warming, such as JunkScience.com funded by ExxonMobile.
Basically people don't want to believe they're responsible for global warming, and conservative politicians and the oil industry give them the option to deny it by providing misinformation.

Why is Nancy Palosi being flown around on a private jet? Why is the Congress Building using coal to heat their offices and etc... Why are most Dem. and Rep. still driving around big SUV's and having huge homes that run on a huge amount of electricity? If we can all pull together (Dems and Reps) we can make a difference. But, unfortunitly all the men and women of Congress want to do is fight. Good Luck.

they are not good at detering they just have media support and support within all parts of the goverment this is why people need to vote in a new party into office in 2008
to many read the media but do not look past the republican and democrat stand point and see oh yeah they are both the same
example and have a look from your point of view for once tell your children your father your mother your aunt to have a look and see past the media coverage of a single sided view there are many many many partys out there and people just need to see them
